Onions

Our house has recently become infested with fruit flies. Since both of my roommates are vegetarians, they have extraneous amounts of fruit/veggies all over the place. I've convinced them to keep just about everything in the refrigerator except their onions, which I didn't think need to be refrigerated. So, do you keep yours in the pantry at room temperature, or in the refrigerator? Do you think this could be the food source for the flies? Should I kill my roommates now or later?
 
In skin, in Pantry(fruit flies won't bother with onions). Partially used or peeled, in fridge sealed in something. You really don't want onions in the fridge that are unseeled, they'll change the flavour of anything and everything that's exposed.
 
Never, ever, ever let onions rot indoors. It is absolutely the most putrid smell known to man which has a habit of clinging to anything it encounters. That being said, in a dark pantry or under the stove is :thumbsup:
 
Whole onions: pantry.
Half cut onion: fridge.

Do you have potatoes in your home? If so, I bet there is a 99% chance that one or more potato is the source of the flies.

As for the roommates, it must be a surprize attack.

Are you nuts? Onions are one of fruit flies' favorite foods.

Stick em in the fridge.

I keep potatoes also outside.
 
Fruit flies inhabit tomatoes, bannanas, and any torn or cut skin of a fruit or vegetable.

Put onions, garlic, ginger, potatoes in a container that has open air circulation. Like a bowl or a box that has grill base (two sides of a cube that has exposure to air).

Cut items are to be bagged or wrapped and refridgerated.

No fruit should be left out longer than 10 days.

If you currently have fruit flies then everthing should be refridgerated or put into a container until the fruit flies die off from lack of food. This also includes washing out soda cans or cups that container fructose. Also bag up vegetable, fruit , and animal product trash into separate baggies (using grocery bags, for instance) before putting them into the trash bin. You don't want any food source open to the flies to feed and lay the eggs.

temp extremes break down the cell wall of onions. Cold temps will do this more quickly that room temp. Dark cool place is the best place for them.

Thanks for the input guys. More or less what I was thinking... These guys insist on buying at Aldi, so the onions rarely come home with much skin on them. Those responsible will be sacked. Anyone up for a vegetarian barbeque? 😀
