:roll: Yes, the AP and dozens of other organizations were handing out National Championships. It wasn't until the modern era of football that the AP and the Coach's Poll were considered to be the source for determining who was the National Champion. Some years they agreed, some years they didn't (see Georgia Tech and Colorado). There was no formal system in place to determine who was the champion - hence, the "mythical" national championship.

Since all of the major conferences agreed to the BCS, the BCS Championship Game now determines who is the National Champion. Everyone agree that this system is imperfect but it is the system that is in place.

The AP can keep on handing out #1s all it wants but it no longer determines who is the National Champion.

At the formation of the BCS, the coaches agreed that the BCS champion would automatically be the number 1 team in the coaches' poll. On the other hand, the AP never agreed to this. Therefore, there were co-national champions in 2003. Even the coaches had USC rated number 1 before the bowls, but had to switch their votes.

Note that I am not a USC fan, and I also think that most college football national championships are mythical. It should be decided on the field...a playoff is needed! Whose to say that Auburn wasn't the best team last year, or Utah for that matter?

I guess all the Conference Comissioners dont know ***** about college football either then. Because they are the ones who chose the BCS to annoint their Football National Championship --- since 1998.

The AP Poll is comprised of a bunch of self-appointed sportswriters who have no more authority to crown a National Champion than you or I. Just because it took D1 college football 100 years to come up with a championship system doesn't mean that the old unofficial system still counts.
