One year after Katrina

I was watching Brian Gumbell and saw how he talked about katrina one year later. He addressed a lot of nagging questions and how they were answered. Particually race and how it was use in this incident. How long it took for response. And he even compared the incident to "this didn't feel like the U.S." I was just curious on other people's opinion on what went wrong exaclty.

My opinion is that it went exactly right. It was no accident that Fema failed. It was what Republicans want, the government out of the lives of losers and taxes returned to the rich.

My own informal shut off the boob tube project will be to studiously avoid all Katrina and 9/11 shows over the next few weeks and change the channel every time the subject comes up.

I reached my personal level of disgust last week when I saw a network commercial for a special about the run-up to 9/11-to be broadcast on 9/10.

Hate. Lies. Greed. The Republican way.

The U.S. is no longer capable of taking care of itself especially when pouring billions overseas for Oil profits with phoney wars.

My favorite is his mom's comment ""And so many of the people in the arena here, you
know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she
chuckles slightly)
is working very well for them." That provided so much insight into the family mindset, that if you had any doubts about what it was before, she instantly dispelled them.

You have to be brain dead to be a Republican today.

Can we have a link for that? Not that I doubt it, but I almost can't believe that would come out of someone's mouth. Almost, mind you. Barbara Bush is one of the worst human beings living on the earth.

I run into a lot of brain dead people on a daily basis and they vote in every election, it's working for them, their hero is still in power.

I disagree with you on one point. There is no doubt that FEMA completely failed in its mandate...another bloated, bureaucratic government agency that lacks the flexibility and leadership to respond in an efficient and timely manner. However, the human element of the Katrina disaster became infinitely more complex given the failures of local government officials to execute simple evacuation plans...and a nanny state cultural dynamic that very much created an expectation that the government could simply rescue thousands of people after a major natural catastrophe.

Remember, the hurricane itself was very much manageable...the failure of the levees is what created the true crisis...a disaster scenario that numerous media outlets modeled and predicted well in advance of Katrina making landfall.

The U.S. is no longer capable of taking care of itself especially when pouring billions overseas for Oil profits with phoney wars.
The U.S. is perfectly capable of taking care of itself...some of its citizens, I am not so sure about.

You have to be brain dead to be a Republican today.
You have to be brain dead to be a Bush supporter perhaps...do not assume that all conservatives or Republicans subscribe to the NeoCon party line...of course, if the Democrats actually provided a viable alternative, we wouldn't be contending with a second Bush term.

Hate. Lies. Greed. The Republican way.
No my friend...the American way...and it has been that way for some time, since the first European settlers set foot in the New World.

I learned that people should not rely on the government for so much. Im not so sure it is the government's responsibility to protect EVERYONE from their own laziness. Or from Mother Nature. ****** happens. With all the buses that never got used, and the time given to evacuate, they had it coming. Sorry to sound so crude, but thats the way it is.

And then there's Ray Nagin Mr-Chocolate-City man. Crying with his hand out to Uncle Sam meanwhile resources he has control over go unused.

That's quite a rant you got going there. Interestingly, Mayor Nagin won his re-election. I guess the people of NO disagree with you.

This is my beef with the whole incident. What really pisses me off with the whole thing is the fact that we lived with Hurricanes, tornados and every act of nature since man walked the earth. This wasn?t a terrorist attack somebody didn?t just come up with a bomb strapped to their body and blew everybody up. This was predictable it was something we knew was going to happened before it did. I think one of the main things about this incident is that public service people at the early time didn?t really take care of people but worried about covering their ass. They had somewhat of a utilitarian point of view of things. Neighboring towns for example barricade their nearest roads so that Super Dome evacuees couldn?t leave when things got real bad in there. What saddens me in the whole thing is that I pay taxes and from that the least I expect the least is simple protection from my U.S. Government. If not protection, a system that I can see that is organized and has a direct mission to solve problems. This was not the case in this incident. What bothers me about this is that if something really bad happened in this country and what I mean by really bad is something of mass proportions (covering multiple states) what would happened. I think very very very little changed from a year ago till now. If another incident of a different type happened like this the results would more or less be the same.

The race component I was talking about I think had a large impact on this incident. Many say the reason for the slow response is due to the low regard for the type of people that was in New Orleans at the time. I think this is partly true but wasn?t the main cause for all the problems. My belief is this, since these were not upper class affluent people if anything was done wrong to them they wouldn?t know best how to deal with it in a civil manner or even any manner at all. A lot was done wrong with them during the whole incident as a result people who took care of the incident knew these people wouldn?t do anything to them.

Nagin is an idiot, and obviously the people who re-elected him are as well. A marriage made in ........

Please catch the HBO airing of WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE - FOUR ACTS.

This I think was by Spike Lee. Very very powerful docu of the events. Well worth watching the 4 hour docu. And worth getting HBO just to catch this program.

Totally shocking!!!

Just as we MUST get Bin Laden for 9/11, Americans MUST "MUST" get Bush OUT of the White House and Republicans OUT of congress for this disgrace on America by the Bush Admin. THEY MUST GO!!!

This, just like 9/11, is UNFORGIVABLE. Bush is the most anti-American since Hitler and Bin Laden...PERIOD!

Hitler actually liked America, felt the best stock of European left for her leaving behind the less capable and ambitious.
