I think the article mentioned that beta radiation is emitted by shards and intact rounds.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that would work. For one, lead blocks radiation by acting as a shield against it. Also, isn't lead very toxic to humans when inhaled or digested? Lead poisoning was a rather common occurance back a few decades ago, IIRC.

While its true that unprocessed tinfoil hats offer negative protection, processing them for 15 minutes in the average microwave oven will transform them into the product you need to fight off mind control. Make sure you use a whole roll in constructing the hat before you boost its power with microwaves.

Depleted Uranium is one of the heaviest materials that is freely available for use in ammunition.

Find a heavier material that is freely available and maybe the military will use it instead.
