One Way To Fight Back Over BF2142 Spyware

I just looked at the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).

http://www.esrb.org/ratings/ratings_guide.jsp

T for teens I guess in their view, a 13 year old is an acceptable age for advertisment exploitation.

Possibly another approach to this is contacting the ESRB and getting there take on this from the angle of exploitation on children for the benefit of profit to a company.

Maybe the ESRB won't be happy with this if they understood this.

They don't list a phone number on their site, but they are in NewYork. If anyone can please get a number for them please post it.

ALOHA

what about buying a copy and then returning it?
:Q

insist . . . the retailers/etailers will get sick of it and EA will get the message

clearly you don't agree with the EULA - there is nothing on the box to 'forewarn' you - and this is a possible way to protest . . . it would cost them big bucks to rma thousands of games

It's simple word of mouth.

Back during the whole Sony DRM snafu I told this doctor guy I know about when he asked me about the latest tech news(he's not computer savy). After I told him he did do a little research on the matter and then relayed it to other people he knew. Even if that information was relayed to 10 or 15 other people via that on contact they may tell their friends, famaily, or co-workers and then so on and so forth. The message can spread exponentially.

Protests outside of Gamestop or EBGames is just fracken retarded.
Us tech savy people have a responsiblity to lead our tech ignorante brothern by example.
We need to be calm and logical if we want to effect their opinions.

Firebombing EA's HQ will only make us(those who are sick of EA's BS and the BS from mass corporations taken advantage of legal consumers) look like crazed geeks, anarchists, and hippies and will be written off a such and our message will be ignored.

No one said anything about a "Protest" that was your take on the whole thing. In fact my thoughts are exactly what you are saying, simple word of mouth, talking to people at these places and letting them know, and then they will let someone else know and so on, etc...

Not only did I say this, but I also said to contact companies, about the matter, which you failed to acknowledge. So if you're going to be incorrect least be incorrect with all of it, LOL.

Oh and Mr. Calm and Logical no one said anything about chaos and disorder too.

I love how people create their own impressions of what others said, and make a complete re-write on it.

Tell me if you can't repeat what someone told you, how do you expect anyone else to get it right? Mr Savvy?

Sheesh 😉

In fact where did I mention anything in this post, on all the ones I replied to about such chaos?

A good reader knows how to follow instructions, at least as to how you put it, and you've failed in every example I have given, and there where many and they where good.

Next time you might just want to read what's being said instead of trying to put your own make on things.

Oh and what's fracken retarded is someone that one thinks this is Battlestar Galactica, and happens to be the only one in over 300 people to have read this, and thought there was some sort of chaos ensuing here.

Please go back and read everything I've said on this post if you care to contribute to it.

I'm not trying to be rude here, but I'm not a teenager either, I happen to be a grown man with a wife, and three kids, and I know how to handle matters such as these.

So please don't be upset, but at least let's have the intelligence to know what's being said, because the only chaos we have going on at this point is what's coming from your corner.

ALOHA 🙂

I can't seem to get anyone with a copy to answer this for me:

Does the outside of the box mention you must accept the slip of paper (it always says you must accept the eula)?
Does it mention the spyware in the EULA (not just the paper slip in the box)?

If someone can answer the two above questions for me I would appreciate it.

If it is not on the box or in the EULA I would be happy to analyze a network trace to see what ad-servers it may be hitting.

Would someone out there with the game be willing to collect a network trace for me?

What I would need:
netmon2/3 or Ethereal/Wireshark network capture.
ipconfig /flushdns before beginning.
Start trace, log onto game, connect to a game server, stop trace.
Buffer size large enough to capture all of the above.
I can provide an upload space for the capture if needed. PM me.

Are you a techno lawyer or something?

He's just curious about what they're grabbing exactly. I am too (although I won't buy the game anyways).

Personally though, if they're grabbing my IP address along, information (outside of the game) on my computer, or tracking anything other than game specific things (play time I understand, the fact I went to a donkey pr0n site isn't any of their business, despite the fact it would make some funny in-game ads 😉), they've stepped over the line.

Smilin I have not personally seen the box, but others who have purchased it say there is nothing on the outside, HENCE all my replies back over such a matter and its possible repercussion.

ALOHA

P.S. If you can get to your gaming store and have a look at one, let us know to make sure, but so far that's the word, nothing on the box, but the surprise inside.

PLEASE KEEP THIS BUMPED!

hehe no.

Reason I ask... If it's on the box you are notified before purchase so by purchasing you 'opt in'. If it's in the eula you 'opt in' as well since the outside of the box says "must accept eula during install or get refund".

Therefore: complete waste of my time to figure out a way to block this since doing so would be violation of eula+law.

I've got some heavy kung-fu in analyzing network traces so I would love to take a peek. But if knowledge does no good I would rather not waste my time.

While everyone is pissed about all this, wouldn't it be nice if a simple hostfile entry was all it took to break the adware? It may or may not be that easy. Gotta see a trace to know.

😀

I don't care so much about the spyware but I'm not buying it because its a reskin of BF2 but the actual game sucks.
