One way - but not the other

I have a peer to peer network at home which includes 2 Win98 se machines.

They are tied together by a SOHO 8 port 100Mbs switch/Cat 5 cabling.

The problem is that I can move files from machine A to B at high speed - a 3MB file takes only seconds. If I try to move it back the other way it will take 5 minutes.

I've tried locking the NIC's to dual mode 100Mbs and it doesn't make a difference.
I've swapped in another hub and it doesn't make any difference.

I need some new ideas.

Thanks for helping.
:)

Try switching the cables from one computer to the other. If the problem is now reversed for the computers, you have a bad cable somewhere. Start substituting.
Or you could skip step 1 and just substitute the cables.
Also, just on a whim, switch to different ports on hub/switch. Wouldn't be the first time I've seen a bad port.(Would actually be the second time. Stupid cheap generics)
But I'd say its a cable.

Well thanks for the help guys - problem solved! :D

I went out and bought a new cable as I figured it wouldn't go to waste even if it wasn't the cable that was shot.

Funny thing happened when I was replacing it, the card pushed right back into the box when I plugged it in. The screw had fallen out of the network card, which was still in the pci slot - but only just. No doubt I was lucky to have a network at all. All fixed now and blistering (well 100mbs) fast! :D

Good job. Thanks for the feedback to let us know how it was resolved. I wish more people did this in the forums.
