When I highlight it I see the account is my ISP account. There are no unread mails in outlook.

look at the very bottom towards the older messages. I think spammers have found a way to change time stamps on mail :|

Are you using Message Rules to send files to specific folders, and mark them as read? I've done that in OE, and found that it does what you're describing. Simply remove the "mark as read" from the message rule to keep it from happening again. In the mean time, just select a message, mark it as unread, then mark it as read. That should turn off the icon in the tray.

checked every folder and NOTHING!! :(

I even deleted everything in my junk mail folder

What happened when you clicked on the mail folder in Outlook and then choose EDIT - Mark All As Read tm37?

even the center messages? I've got hundreds of messages in a few of my folders and it's real easy to miss one unread.

probably not the problem but I've been getting a few messages dated sometime 2003!

Mark all a read and I still have one as UNREAD!!!! :|
