watched 2 episodes of mad men since it had such great reviews and was bored out of my mind.... does it get good after a few episodes or something?

Why hasn't Mad Men been mentioned by anyone besides myself. If Breaking Bad is a 10 ,which it probably is, then Mad Men would be a 9.75. It's seriously that good. I will admit Breaking Bad is the best TV series I have ever watched and Mad Men is right behind it IMO.

Well the OP wasn't looking for suggestions, he only asked about the 2 shows and they're both much darker then Mad Men so it just might not be his cup of tea anyway. I got into Mad Men at least a year after proclaiming Breaking Bad as my favorite show ever but it's still an easy choice, MM is the best show currently on air.

breaking bad, because if you watch dexter past season 2, the whole show is ruined. Ideally, i wish they had only made one season of dexter.

breaking bad has been good all throughout.

both are great. I much prefer Dexter, even though the most recent season was rather terribad.

However....Mad Men and Deadwood are better than both!

I love both shows, but Breaking Bad wins, hands-down. One of the best television shows in history. Dexter is fun, and I've watched every episode and anxiously await the new season, but the quality is nowhere close to Breaking Bad. Which, to me, is amazing, as BB airs on AMC, while Dexter airs on Showtime. Normally, I prefer shows on HBO/Showtime, as they can curse (more than AMC), and show nudity, etc., but BB is amazing.

The wait for the final 8 episodes of BB is already excruciating.

Been watching BB, done with S1 and in the middle of S2, and like everyone said, it's an awesome show! Only wish I had enough time to go through the episodes quicker to catch up 🙂

Breaking Bad is probably my favorite "serious" show of all time. It's good enough that it could be a really long movie. Haven't seen nearly as much Dexter, as it didn't hook me in. So I'm quite biased, but I'd pick Breaking Bad.

Breaking Bad doesn't have many plot twists / edge of your seat cliffhangers...so some people may not like it. It also don't allow for much watercooler talk.

Breaking Bad... after season 4, you'll get sick of Dexter whining about his "Dark Passenger" every friggin episode.

Love the show, but Dexter is tough to watch in a marathon because of that.

I disagree. It's not whining, it's learning/evolving. When you watch them one after another (over seasons) there is a noticeable growth in how it affects him. I think a lot of people either miss that, just don't enjoy the show enough, or aren't willing to watch an episode more than once.
People tend to think "he said he has no feelings in season 1, then in season 4 he does" and that doesn't make sense. It does, if you watch each season. The character is more complex than people are willing to see/accept. He's learning from each experience (good and bad) and realizing he doesn't have to be what Harry thought he was...and what the limit was for him.

Do I agree some seasons are weak? Absolutely. Do I agree they take some liberties with reality/facts/plot holes? Sure. It's a dramatized television show, not a documentary, so it really doesn't bother me. If you overlook some of the poor choices for actors/actresses (see Julia Stiles) the story/development/growth of the Dexter character is still quite interesting.

All that said, I still agree that Breaking Bad is by far the better series. 🙂

I'm not sure if you're serious, but if you are, I couldn't disagree more. There have been endless numbers of plot twists, and the show is so rich and detailed that it provides endless topics of conversation. Honestly I'd be hard pressed to name a more distinctive or artistically satisfying work of fiction that has emerged in my lifetime (that isn't to say it's the best, just that I don't think there have been any better).

Season 4 of Dexter (with John Lithgow) is some of the best TV you'll ever watch. The rest of the series almost seems like a disappointment after that.

both are awesome shows. however, the last couple seasons for 'dexter' haven't been stellar. i dunno, actually. in comparison with 'breaking bad', 'dexter' has more solid seasons overall. season 2 and almost all of season 3 of 'breaking bad' were almost unwatchable for me because they were so aggravating. however, at least the last two seasons of 'dexter' were watchable and entertaining for me, even though they were the worst of the series.

i voted 'breaking bad', but it was a tough call. you can foresee how the series will end in 'breaking bad'... you can't with 'dexter'... it compels you to watch and stay caught up in hopes that your mind can formulate a conclusion.

Dexters best season was the first one. Its more like a mini-series made from the book. After that they ran out of their best ideas and by 5 its damn near unpleasant to watch.

You could just do season 1, stop, and be perfectly fine. Trust me. I'm a big fan but I can be objective. You dont need to see the other seasons.

I thought 4 was better than 1. 1 was the second best season though.

1, 2, and 4 were all awesome. The rest were kinda meh.

2 really was just a redo of 1 though. Either way, while I liked the show, I think it's run its course.

Hmm...agree and disagree...I think this season could be pretty interesting given the new scenario..however, I don't know how they are going to drag it out into 2 seasons. It really seems like this one should be the last one.

as to OP: I can't tell you which to watch first..but watch both..who cares what order. You'll know soon enough if you don't like one or the other. They are both worth watching.

They keep covering the same old concepts over and over again just with different villains. Dexter keeps relearning the same life lessons every season.
