question: what's the difference between a hardware modem and software/winmodem? just installed a new hardware modem,don't see a difference(exept for the answering machine/voice mail stuff).
prob: finally got my xpert128 vid card to run, still haven't tried to put my accelerator back to full. (last time i tried it , it locked the system on boot and took me 25 mins to get to safe mode. neither f8 or control would get me in. i d/l ' ed active x 8.1 do ya'll think i should try to set the accel back to full. lmk, jer
 
Hardware modems do all of the work - converting digital to analog, etc. With software modems, your CPU does most of the work. You don't really see any difference unless you have a slow computer. ( < 200MHz)

thanks for the replies, i looked at the faq's but didn't see anything that applied, i'll try your link and look again. while on the subject, the modem came w/ 2connectors one 3prong female w/red/white/black- one 4 prong female w/yellow/blk/blk/green what are these for? tia, jer

I'd have to disagree with that. The vast majority of modems sold today are software modems including almost every one put into a pre-built system.

jer22 - Don't know what those connectors are for. Some modems have connectors to connect to your sound card, some have microphone inputs. Could be one of those.
