I need opinions on rather I should get a single processor or two.I'm looking at either a AMD single(about 1.2ghz),or a duel P3 system(1ghz)It will be for a server(http, ftp, and maybe some Counter-Strike,running w2k)the prices are close(about $50-$100 more for the p3).I would think the p3 would have a better overall speed, but then I think about the Athlons DDR.What do you guys think?

Hmm... you don't need all that power to run a small server like that. Honesty, Serving a FTP, HTTP, CS, telnet, SSH requires maybe half of that, if that, esp if you are running Linux. It would be much better if you got a slower system (Duron) and lot's of RAM.

Do you already have a p3 1ghz chip? Cause if not you are high!!! 1 P3 1ghz chip is like 180 buck and a 1.2 if you are talking thunderbird is like 110-118...so you must be talking mp at 235 but then again 2x180 is 360bucks plus add a duel p3 board which I would have to assume gotta be more expensive then say a great epox board...

So I guess I am wondering how is it only 50-100 bucks more to go dual not "duel" p3 1h\ghz system? Going to use existing sdram and the ddr will require new memory????

Unless your server is on a T3 or better getting 100,000+ hits per day you will realize no benefit from running dual PIIIs over a single Athlon or even a single PIII for that matter. RAM and proper disk configuration is far more critical. I would recommend the following:

Single CPU - Athlon or PIII 700MHz or greater
512+ MB PC133, DDR or RDRAM, preferrably ECC compliant
Minimum of three (3) Seagate Cheetahs in following configuration.
(1) 9.1GB or 18.2GB Seagate Cheetah U160 for Win2000 System Drive ONLY
(1) 18.2GB Seagate Cheetah U160 for Application Drive ONLY
(1) 36.4GB or 73GB Seagate Cheetah U160 for Data Storage Drive ONLY

You can add another 9.1GB Cheetah for a swap and another 18.2GB Cheetah as a mirror for your App Drive plus as many more Data Storage Drives as you need by either spanning or striping. But the minimum server configuration should consist of three (3) drives, preferrably SCSI.
