I think the implication was electric power, which is definitely an invention.

I'd go with the interent, just becuase it would require computers, electricity, and telecommunications, netting me three technoligies for the price of one 😀
 
If you are going to go with something as general as electricity (meaning electric theory, power plants, power grid, home wiring, and I'm assuming you also are thinking of electronic goods) then I'm going to post something general.

Sanitation.

If I had to narrow it to one more specific item, I'd want to say the technology to display motion pictures. I wouldn't want to live without TVs, computers, movies, etc.
