One out of two duo cores not working! need help

Hi guys,

I just realized that one of my cores has either stopped working or died on me. I've using a E6750 and running a 3.2GHz overclock for about 3 weeks or so already. It usually runs at about 46 degrees C idle for both cores and when I'm playing games (warhammer online), it goes to about 52 degrees C for both.

I had stuttering issues with Warhammer Online recently so I decided to go ahead and install some new ATI Catalyst 8.10 drivers. Somehow after doing my driver cleaning, registry cleaning and installing my new drivers, I found out that one of my cores had died or stopped working! I checked this through coretemp and CPU-z as well, it only states that I have a single core.

Can anyone knowledgeable enough give me some advice? Did my CPU actually fry out or did i accidentally turned one of my cores off. Much thanks.

Oh and I'm using a Asus P5K mobo.

First things first - clear the CMOS, disable the overclock (well, clearing CMOS should set you back to default values), and then test.

Welcome to anandtech. It's not really possible to "fry" one core, while leaving the other perfectly functional. You may be having Windows problems, which happens alot when a noob overclocks, and didn't realize that it wasn't actually stable, but it's extraordinarily unlikely that one of your cores has just stopped working. Possible, yes, but highly unlikely.

He didn't mention what motherboard and BIOS he's using.

I've been hanging with the nVidia chipsets. I've been using an eVGA 780i motherboard for a couple months.

It includes a BIOS feature that allows the user to disable one of the cores. In fact, I believe "core 1 enabled / core 2 disabled" was a default setting that came up when I first started up the machine and entered BIOS.

So I'm guessing the OP should check his BIOS . . . . .

The P5K uses the P35 chipset, which doesn't have that option.

Perhaps Vfsb or Vgtl is out of whack?
