Two. Only trogolodytes use a single space.

I worked with someone who used two spaces after a period, and it made it extremely difficult to proof-read and make corrections on her papers, as you have to go through the entire thing and check for spacing consistency. There's no need for two spaces after a period; if you can't figure out where a sentence ends, that's your problem, not mine.
Find and replace. Takes a few seconds to do. I work in many groups that write together and a find and replace for consistancy is always the last thing I do.

Two spaces looks better in my opinion, but it appears that I'm in a minority here. I'm fairly certain typesetters do it for monetary reasons. A few extra spaces might lead to a few more pages in a manuscript, which is a few more dollars to pay for materials. Now that lots of text is digital, we should be free to do as we wish.

Personally, I'm a double space between words within a sentence nazi though. Those unecessary extra spaces between words really look bad (especially when using justified text so the double spaces between words can be an inch long in some cases.)

I worked with someone who used one space after a period, and it made it extremely difficult to proof-read and make corrections on her papers, as everything looks needlessly shoved together. There's no need for just one space after a period; if you can't figure out why you need to leave enough space, that's your problem, not mine.

you are probably 87% illiterate.

My high school English teachers required us to use two spaces after a period, because that's how it's done.

yeah, so you came from a shitty school system.

sorry, about your lazy-ass teachers enforcing a system that went extinct 4 decades ago.

I do it because of an olllld ass lady named Ms. baker. She taught old school typing in 8th grade on typewriters, and had hearing aids. If you mouthed (without talking) "Ms. Baker! Ms. Baker!" She would turn them up. Then you yelled really loud at her.

Anyways - she taught us to double space after the period and I'm really trying hard to break myself of the habit.

Who cares? Inane stuff like this comes up far too often.

Probably the best answer. There are better things to get worked up over than whether someone uses one or two spaces between sentences.

Also, the expression of the kid in your profile pic is great. He must be angry about someone's spacing between sentences!

The programmers are idiots.

It's OK Numetroll. You don't have to take your utter wrongness so damn personally.

It's comical for us, perhaps, but I fear the discovery of how wrong you have been may raise your blood pressure.

Like others said, one space is considered correct. That said, I find it easier to read with two spaces, so that is how I type.

Back in the day when I learned to type, we used two spaces. It's a hard habit to break. We even tried to use correct spelling and punctuation back then. :)

I hate it when people use two spaces.

Almost as much as when people put a space before the period. That's actually somewhat useful though, as it helps identify the bat shit crazy lunatics. :whiste:

I never heard of anyone using 2 spaces before...

Do you use 2 spaces after ! or ? too?
Two spaces was taught for many years in school. Typewriters and many older text editors printed nearly unreadable sentences without more space after the end of the sentence. Plus, the extra space is supposed to give the reader more pause time between sentences. Think of a speaker. Between sentences, there is a slightly longer pause than between words. That is how you differentiate the end of one thought and the start of the next.

Otherwise, why bother with a space at all?The puncutation is the space.See, you don't need any!Lets all just skip the proper pauses.Won't that be great?
