Wow. As if Requiem for A Dream didn't do it for me when i was thinking of depressing movies...Oh, well.

yeah Grave of the Fireflies is one of the saddest movies ever. But it's suck a good movie too. This is a movie every anime fan should see, and should use to get their friends into anime.
I just got thru watching it late lastnite and had to post something. It was so hard to watch the last 30mins.....if you don't cry watching movies, I think this movie will push you over the edge.
BTW, I've been reading Anandtech forum since early 1998 but never register...you can say I was a lurker.
Agreed. This is one of the most depressing movies ever. Very well made. The pacing is perfect, animation is good in a subtle way. You've got to see it before hearing too much about it.

I think the most depressing thing about this movie is that the elder brother tried his absolute best to keep his baby brother alive, but his baby brother died in front of him anyways. He was only like 15 or so (correct me if I'm wrong, I watched it like back when it came out in Japanese), and there's so much love between him and his brother shown through their conversation and his attempts to find food for his little brother that you would literally break down when the little brother died.
This movie really made me hate war (not that I like it before the movie, but it definitely brings up my level of hatred). Both of them would have been living such a happy life if there were no war and their mother did not die.

I think something must be wrong with me. I've seen it 3-4 times now and I fell asleep the first time, and was just plain bored with it the last few times.
Come to think of it, I can't actually remember a movie that's actually made me feel depressed. I'll have to think on this.

well, there are certain movies that you really have to be fresh awake to see for there aren't a lot of intense entertainment (big explosions, kong fu fighting and such). But if you were able to sit through it it's really worth your time.
some of Cowboy Beebop are very depressing, but it's overall entertainning, and every episode's half an hour. You should try watching that. No way you're going to fall asleep that quickly right? right?
Yes, "Grave of the Fireflies" is a very sad movie, and it is an extreamly well made animation (subtitle).
The saddest for me was Hanh Trinh Tim Tu Do & I cried every time I watch it. Every young Vietnamese should watch this movie so they could understand what their parent went through to get them to America & to appreciate Vietnam.

It is a Vietnamese music/synopsis video. In my book Vietnamese musical video is very cheesy, but this movie HTTTD described the pain of leaving friends/families and take a gamble at sea & pirates. If you move beyond the propaganda of the previous regime it shows one should be proud to be a Vietnamese, and can be enjoyable in a painful way. It took me 3 tries to finish it the first time, because it was very painful to see in one go. It is not the images that you are watching for, but for the poetic words which are among the most thoughtful phrases I have ever heard.
Cartoon...? Its anime not a cartoon. Rent it and watch it. I hope you dont label hentai as just a cartoon.
