One of the Koch brothers at it again

boomerang

Damned filthy capitalist. The nerve of him to donate $100 million to a cancer research center at MIT. That, on top of the $100 million already donated to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as well as the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

NYT article follows with all the negatives one would expect.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Mr. Koch warned that government spending cuts could impede cancer research. And he urged donors to fill the gap.

“The National Institutes of Health, and the National Cancer Institute in particular, are facing serious cutbacks in their funding due to the massive deficits the federal government is incurring,” he said in his speech, in a tent outside the seven-story building. “If the cutbacks happen, it will significantly diminish the level of research that can be carried on at the Koch Institute. I earnestly ask you to do all you can to help maintain the superb research at the Koch Institute at its maximum level.”

It takes a pretty well-heeled individual to donate that kind of money. But, as we often hear, folks at that income level are just terrible people. I guess it's better to take their money and spend it on teaching Sawzall dildo classes. That's what the people are clamoring for.

Bad people do good things for PR. When you locate the reason you didn't gush over Saddam for creating schools and hospitals, then you'll know why this story doesn't affect critics of the Koch Bro.

You often hear? How many times have you often heard bad things about Warren Buffett? Seems he's in the same income category, which means there must be pages upon pages of crazy leftist ravings condemning him for the sole reason of being wealthy, right?

Awesome, the asshole was guilted into coughing up. Sounds like he has a LOT to hide. We should yank that lid off the steaming pot of shit.

I think your medication needs some adjusting.

But I get it.

Rich left leaners that make charitable contributions are wonderful people.

Rich right leaners that make charitable contributions are no good sacks of shit.

It's true, all I really needed to know about progressives I learned in Kindergarten. Unlike them, I moved on.

So did the robber barons of old. Carnegie? Rockefeller? Same move. Their charitable donations/advocacy, while admirable, doesn't mean that their other activities weren't dangerous or hostile to democracy.

As our shocked GOP fan clubbers sit in disbelief that anyone would criticize one of the Koch brothers overall life record, I have two words for you: George Soros and or Moveon.org

Kudos to Mr Koch!

So, a rich, devious asshole does a good thing. Hooray for him. I'll still feel comfortable bitching about the next bad thing he does.

Some of you talk like he's balancing his Karma or something. But in society, we seldom judge people as good or bad by some point system.

Kudos to Mr Koch!

While I can somewhat agree when donations are made to cancer research, but we still have to ask where that money came from and how it was earned.

I simple googled how the Koch brother acquired their wealth, and found a pile of links. To put it mildly, most of them do not cast the Koch famdamily or the Koch brother in favorable light.

But one somewhat instructive link is................
http://engforum.pravda.ru/index.php...he-koch-bros-get-thier-money-from-nazi-camps/

Looks like the bitch of Buchenwald is in their family tree, and apples don't fall far from the tree. As the Koch brother do much to screw up American politics as they practice
corruption and thievery.

The Koch brothers give a lot to 'good causes' - whether this or the arts - but they do far more harm with their radical right-wing sponsorhip than any good from other things.

I like how the OP skipped right over the the first response - which seems to make a reasonable point - and went straight to responding to a Steeplerot post. 😀

I'm sure his picture will look good next to all the Mafia dons who donated to charity during the great depression.

This times 100X

Same reason that Mark Zuckerberg gave away 100million right before "The Social Network" movie came out.
That and Koch gives this money away right after people see his name attached to the Wis Gov.

They sure built it fast. Matter of days, huh?

You're smarter than that.

Did you even read what you linked to? Its mostly about how bad the Wis Gov call made him look but...

"“I read stuff about me and I say, ‘God, I’m a terrible guy,’ ” he said. “And then I come here and everybody treats me like I’m a wonderful fellow, and I say, ‘Well, maybe I’m not so bad after all.’ ” "

Yea the call had nothing to do with him coming out and doing interviews like this. 🙄

I read it twice. Your insinuation is that he got all philanthropic to counter a prank phone call. My point to you and I'm thinking you didn't get it, is that there had to be years of planning and construction for something "which he gave $100 million to help build". This wasn't some last minute effort to counter a prank call that gave lefties a chubber. A prank call that was ignored by everyone with even a low level of maturity because we recognized it as little more than a sophomoric prank.

But, once again I get it. The hate runs so deep for people with money that give to conservative causes that the stops must be pulled out to belittle and berate them. What is never understood by the left is that those of us on the right just kind of chuckle to ourselves at all the "outrage" and move on. We understand it's little more than juvenile behavior and something we've learned to ignore.

You got all caught up in the typical NY Times slant as I knew some would. Congrats - I guess. Why would you think someone of his stature would need to go on a PR mission to put a spin on what was immediately identified as a stunt? A stunt pulled by people that think like schoolchildren that essentially asked the governor if he had Prince Albert in a can?

you are caught up in another flavor of exactly the same thing...not only that but you are quite smug about it

You're right there was years of planning, him planning on how to hopefully stay alive longer as he did not give until AFTER he got cancer. He is not giving to cancer research because he thought it was a good thing for others. He is giving now as he admits because he has cancer.

"Mr. Koch said that he became passionate about cancer research after he learned in 1992 that he had prostate cancer."

Me and my wife have given to cancer, hiv, homeless shelters, etc... not because we are affected by it but because we think those we gave to are good causes. Something Koch and others don't get till its to late.

....

And the hundreds of millions of dollars that they have given in the past that are not for cancer research?....
