One of the capasitor burned, but my K7S5A still runs

Anybody know what's mistakes I possibly did to my K7S5A?... One of its capasitor, which is close to IDE slot has become charcoal now, heheh..🙂 hate the smell, eeewwww...., but the mobo still runs like hell, stable and seems to be okey till now.Does it have somethin' to do with heats in my case?, my computer always runs nonstop (24hrs a day) and mostly used fully load, downloading, uploading, gaming, watching TV, DVD, VCD, listening music/radio, making video, and statistical applications. 2 days ago, I see that my overclocked 800@1000mhz Duron's temperature raised from 42-43 to 47-50 celcius degree for no reasons. No changes in board and PSU temperature though.

FYI, I have 3 extra fans, 80inch front intake, 80inch back outake and front panel HD fan (triple fans). CPU H/S+fan is Thermaltake Volcano 6cu.

Well, wow. I don't know what to say. Maybe just the external casing of the capacitor is fried but its still working?

I'd say you got lucky. Can't think of anything that would make something spontaneously combust though.
 
I was there and I saw it happened.
The mobo has one capasitor less now but it's still running great.
I guess that answered everybody who questioning the stability
of this board.

Does anybody care to try it, see if your board
will work flawlessly with one capasitos burned out ?

Where can I get one of those 80inch fans?? Does your computer fly now? Just kidding. I had a k7s5a, and it ran ok, but it was constantly doing strange things and I got tired of troubleshooting it. Replaced it with a 8kha+ and couldn't be happier. Maybe my problems were the result of an evil rogue capacitor. If only I had known, I could have burnt it off and maybe the board would have been healed.
 
Two things could have happened...

#1 - The cap could be fried and shorted internally or externally, keeping the board running. However, somewhere the voltage isn't getting regulated properly, which means expect something else to fry not too long from now.

#2 - The cap is just part of a voltage regulating circuit (see above). It's just used as a filter to clean up some signal noise. In that event, don't expect anything to fry any time soon, however, the signal integritiy of the line(s) it supports will be compromized. You may start getting sporadic data corruptions which will eventually lead to BSOD's, crashes, corrupted files, and more.

You didn't like the smell? Last cap I fried smelled like roasting peanuts or peanut butter... they use peanut oil in some caps. Hehe...

PS - Suggestion, find out the value and voltage of the cap, go to radioshack and buy a replacement. Grab your soldering iron, rinse. replace, and reuse.
 
thanks for all inputs, heheh... in fact now I have a K7S5A mobo with one less capasitor,.. I took it off, it looks cool now, one black spot with two pins left on the mobo.

I just upgraded my cpu to Athlon XP1900+ and OC it to 2000+ (1650mhz) using 138/138 setting, and wow!!! I'm happy it still runs like hell... I really love my ECS ...

SunnyD, actually I also add one more Blue ORB fan to the SiS chipset now, I guess you're rite... my system just need one more thing to fly, "wings" hehhehe🙂
