I think the challenger is a good lookin car and all but damn it's too heavy to like it. Kinda like a fat chick with a cute face. You want to like it but damn it doesn't fit together.

I'm getting bored of people moaning about car weight. If it bothers you buy an Elise or an Atom.

Not that heavy cars can't be fast, but cars like this just seem "half-assed."

"Well our engineering isn't that good, but let's just throw a big V8 in there to compensate for the extra pork"

It just seems that cars that are light and powerful (due to technology, not necessarily displacement) are so much better because the engineering is really cutting edge.

Nice car. I'd like one, but really cars with this much power are stupid on public roads. You can never floor the thing without almost immediately becoming unsafe/and or begging for a ticket, should a cop see you. I think performance cars will increasingly become relegated to race tracks, although it seems a lot of people still like their high horsepower cars (and power is going up), despite the fact we're increasingly being forced to drive slower because of congestion and, with increasing prevalence, moving violation cameras.

Spiel over.

I complain about cars weight because they're heavier and NOT because of the engine. Take the Z06 Corvette, it's manages to squeeze under 3200LBs with some wiggle room while having a nice beefy engine while the Eclipse would need to lose the interior and stereo to get to the weight of the "big and heavy" Z-28 that was killed because the market wanted "small and light" sports coupes that are now neither small nor light.

There's a reason why the fastest stock Dakotas are the '92-'93 years even though they aren't the most powerful.

I think the "feature war" and obsession over packing more plastic inside of a car's cabin than Pamela Anderson's breasts during Baywatch was a problem from the start. The engines have become insanely more powerful in the last 10 years to the point that a stock base Corvette is packing almost as much power as an LT1 Firebird from Lingenfelter did in 1995. But the 400 or so pounds that were packed on to the rest of the new Camaro negates a large chunk of that gain.

On the plus side, car manufacturers are starting to get better at their designs again, for a few years they were trying to out-ugly each other with varying successes. I have hope that they'll learn what a proper rake is and not make a parked car not look like it is trying to brake to avoid running into an Xbox 360's power supply which would make it's plastic no-real-bumper nose crumple like a dixie cup that someone stuck in the dishwasher.

It's not too much to ask for a 2 door coupe to weigh somewhere between 3500-3800 lbs.

This car is not meant to be an engineering exhibition for Chrysler. It's a halo car for the nostalgic muscle car crowd and I'd say it does the job exceptionally well. And this time around, it can brake too (110ft 60-0).

The big V8 isn't the problem. Keep the big V8 no matter what but make the car 3,600 lbs absolute tops.

The z28 died because they were shitty cars not because of weight. The only reason to buy the camaro was the power so the bread and butter v6 camaros didn't sell enough to keep the v8s around. They are like driving in a bathtub with a horrible interior. Mustangs don't weigh any less and they sell like hot cakes because they were much nicer to drive even though they were slower in most cases.

I don't see why either. The Mustang, 350z, 335i, 135i, and even GTO was able to weigh that much or less.

I want.

And I'm also surprised they managed to make it look even better than the concept! I drooled over the concept.

Now they just need to release the 395 Crate model in 2010 like the rumors say. I want to get a couple year old model down the road once I have my commission for a few years and am financially stable/secure.

less performance and worse gas mileage.

I would say there is an interest in keeping those as high as possible and thus people would like cars not to be pigs.

He's bored with people complaining about weight; I believe there are legitimate reasons for complaining which I outlined.

And if you don't like it, don't buy it. There are cars out there for you, go buy them and leave the ones you don't like alone.

If you like the Challenger, you should be complaining about the weight. Imagine what the same drivetrain would be capable of if they'd kept the weight at 3500-3800.

Was the less performance/worse gas mileage aimed at the Lotus Elise? That's a car that gets about 25mpg when driven hard and 30+ on the freeway and unless the Challenger can do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds I can't see him winning the performance argument either. It definitely won't compare in handling or braking to the Lotus.

i guess you could stuff 3 extra people in the lotus... if they were in bodybags :p

my take on what ayabe said is that reducing weight and improving MPG should be at the forefront of development.

Well, that's why I asked. It wasn't clear to me what he was saying.

Oh, and you couldn't fit 3 people in an Elise even if they were in bodybags. ;) Although, my wife and I did drive around one night and look at Christmas lights in our neighborhood with my son in the Elise. He sat on my wife's lap. ;)
