I'm not exactly sure what the "VPN" advantages are of this router over another router. I know my routers here can handle a VPN connection...it's just another layer of encryption and tunneling. How is this different?
This is a true
Firewall router. Unlike most broadband routers, the X41 lets you define access rules for both incoming and outgoing traffic. For example, you can block certain web sites by URL. You can also prohibit some kinds of inbound traffic. The buzzword is "SPI" - Stateful Packet Inspection. The X41 is a more secure version of the R41.
As I understand it, the VPN feature of the X41 allows you to establish a VPN connection directly from the router. Other routers will let you
pass a VPN connection through, but you must use special software on the PC (or a separate hardware VPN device). If you're managing systems for a company and need to set up home offices or other small remote offices, a router/VPN can make this transparent to end users - they don't have to do anything to set up the connection.
