One More 8k7a question???

Thanxs again in advance, What do you think the chances of my already preloaded hard drive from my 8kta+(KT133 chipset) working as is in my new 8k7a? I know it's best to backup and reload everything when you first build a system but since I'll be using all the same componets. IE: video card, ethernet adapter and so on and the board is from the same manuf. and a AMD cpu I thought maybe I could just throw it in and it would boot and work OK, I mean it still needs the VIA 4 in 1's right? all the other drivers should be the same? I guess I'll give it a try and see what happens if it dosen't work I'll just format and reinstall. anybody tried this before???

The 8K7A uses the AMD Northbridge, not VIA. While you may be able to get away with it, and install the AMD drivers, (back up your important stuff first) I would suggest a fresh OS install.

EDIT: before you try it, uninstall the VIA 4 in 1's from your system before swapping boards. Like I said, you would be better off just starting fresh with only the video card and drives installed. After you load your OS, add your other cards one at a time, rebooting between each to catch any conflicts, and address/correct them while you know what they are instead of throwing all of the cards in and having to guess which may be giving you problems.

I just built a new system with an 8k7a, I used my hard drive that I had been using in my BX board with a 500 P3. I fired up the new 1.4 Tbird/Epox system and the hard drive loaded Windows 98, found all the "new" hardware such as ide controllers, pci bridge etc, several reboots later I was installing the Amd drivers and what I needed of the Via drivers, been running smoothly for over a weeek.

Just to be safe, I did backup my registry before moving the hard drive in case I needed to start the "upgrade" again. So just go for it.

Thanxs for the tips I'll do what you said and give it a try if I have problems I'll just backup and reinstall a fresh copy of Win98.

funny, i recently went from an 8kta+ to the 8k7a without doing a fresh install...no problems at all!!!

reformatting and reinstalling is kinda like
vomiting......

you hate ta do it....you'd give anything not to hafto
but afterwards, you feel so much better......

If you can....I'd recommend proceeding as follows:

fdisk
make partition just for win98 and win98se install files
so they're always on a seperate drive ready for action!

format harddrive

have only video card in slots.....all others out

disable sound in bios if yer gonna use a card
disable plug and play os in bios
disable any usb mouse or keyboard
(FIRST AND FOREMOST, IF YOU're using a 133fsb processor, move jclock jumper to 1 and 2 jumped
so yer running at 1/3 for pci bus instead of 2/3.....otherwise you'll have probs)
install win98
install win98se
install your video drivers
install directx8
install amd miniport driver
install via busmaster driver
install via usb filter
(don't do 4 in 1 and if u do.....do NOT do the agp miniport driver)
install microsoft's fix for usb on fast systems (available link on epox's site under faq)
now, begin introducing cards one by one and installing drivers one by one,
rebooting after each time so u can isolate any irq problemos

if yer mouse is usb, introduce mouse last after downloading latest
drivers (USB MICE are finicky with this board.....must get ms fix for via chipsets)
