OK, latest update.

Yes, you guys were right an fdisk /mbr did the trick on the DOS thing.

I tried installing the driver Colt posted, but it didn't recognize the CDROM after boot. So I tried the SB16 ISA driver from Creative and that didn't work. For giggles I tried Colt's driver again but still no go.

Hmm interesting, I just checked Creative's website looking for the specific card. CT2260. They don't have anything on it. Here's the list of models they have:

CT1730 (SB16 non CSP, Panasonic interface)
CT1740 (SB16 CSP, Panasonic interface)
CT1750 (SB16 MCD CSP, Panasonic, Mitsumi, Sony interface)
CT1770 (SB16 SCSI-2, CSP, SCSI-2 Interface)
CT1779 (SB16 SCSI-2, Non CSP, SCSI-2 Interface)
CT2230 (SB16 MCD CSP, Panasonic, Mitsumi, Sony interface)
CT2230C (SB16 CSP, Panasonic interface)
CT2239 (SB16 MCD Non CSP, Panasonic, Mitsumi, Sony interface)
CT2239C (SB16 MCD Non CSP, Panasonic)
CT2290 (SB16 IDE)
CT2291 (SB16 IDE)
CT2750 (Easy CD, External CD-ROM drive)
CT2770 (SB16 Value, No CSP, Panasonic interface)
CT2779 (SB16 Value, No CSP Panasonic interface)
CT2919 (SB16 No CSP IDE and Panasonic interface)

Mine has the Sony, Mitsumi and Panasonic interfaces. The drive is a TEAC CD-55A 4X that was always plugged into the Panasonic interface. Anyway the card must be either the 2230 or the 2239 since those are the only ones that match the specs...

<< Since you did a Format /s to the HDD it should have booted. I am wondering what that "stage1" message is all about? Where did this hard drive come out of? What OS was on it before? That "stage1" message might be something in the boot block. Try from your Dos Boot Disk running fdisk /mbr and see if that will take care of it. After that run fdisk without the /mbr and make sure the c partition is set active. Then try formatting again format /s and then try booting off the C drive and see what happens.

Agree with that procedure.

My guess on that misterious "stage 1" message: you (or someone else) had a boot manager on that machine (System Commander being a prime suspect here). The fdisk /mbr should take care of that.

Last time I used the disk it was in a Linux box, that's probably what did it.

i think i have the software settings right with the driver and autoexec, etc. it gives me a "no drives detected" error, though, so now I'm gonna start messing with cables.

i downloaded the TEAC driver from their website and edited the config and autoexec files and that got the CDROM recognized and gave it a drive letter. Imagine my surprise when inserting a CD (any CD) resulted a lovely grinding noise! grind,grind,grind...nothing. So after all that work (and all your work) the damn drive has kicked the bucket. I guess we get the satisfaction of solving my problem, even though in the end it was pointless.

yeah i forgot that you need mscdex.exe as well as the driver disk.

my SB16 is model 17xx with a panasonic 2x drive.

last time i ran it, i didnt need to install drivers for the SB16, just the cdrom drivers.
BUT.. if it matters i have the driver disk for the SB16 too.. ill post it if you want.

if you dont have MSCDEX.exe you should be able to get it off a 9x box (thats what ive done before)

check the jumper on the drive? mine has ID= 1,2,3,4. (it might be 0,1,2,3) anyways. i selected the lowest one. (0, or 1 depending on the layout, i forget)

edit: you posted that it doesnt work. lol

Hmm... a most disappointing ending.

Ah well, at least you gained some experience ;)

So... what are you going to do with the system now? Paperweight?

I'm sort of debating what to do with it. I'll probably bite the bullet and bring down my Win2K machine for a bit to borrow an optical drive from it. I could have done that before but what fun would that have been?

Besides, I re-learned how to edit the those old config and autoexec files! I remember those from when I was a kid, back when Win 3.11 was the norm... How soon we forget. :)

Driverguide had a driver for that number (at least for Win 3.11)........:)

BTW It was a vibra 16. Maybe from an OEM or something. At least you still have a decent legacy sound card.

Its cool you got it working enough to at least figure out it was messed up though, good job.....:)

.........edit...........
If the place asks for a User name and password its always (drivers) (all).
