Did an interview at one of the companies here, and aced all the questions (or so I thought). The interviewers were all impressed with my experience and knowledge, and confirmed it to a recruiter who was the last one to speak to me. I was fully expecting a followup and another round.

Two days pass: sorry, we found someone else.

Bah.

Sounds like they checked your references or called a previous employer.

They did not ask for references yet, and my current employer would have given them a stellar reference if they asked.

Was this a public sector position? They will often do this, because they have earmarked an internal candidate but are required to do interviews anyway.

Publicly held company, but private sector.
