One core dead on my E5200

Has anyone else ever run into a core dying on their CPU? It wasn't even overclocked its entire lifespan. I was however trying to overclock it for the first time ever in 3 months from a stock 200 mhz FSB to a whopping 233 on my shuttle SG31G2 (G31 chipset), and I didn't overvolt it or anything (less than 1.35V all the time).

It kept freezing or having strange crashing right after logging into XP. I tried swapping out the memory, video card, etc, and I was at my wits end till I went into the BIOS and disabled a single core. Now it works like a champ, albeit a single core 2.5ghz one. As soon as I change that single option its back to crashing like clockwork. Next step is to swap CPUs with another computer and see if its the CPU or the chipset. Anyone else have this problem and figure out how to resolve it?

Forgot to mention, its definately not just a XP problem since it crashes when trying to install vista too. Also hangs sometime even in the BIOS. I even reflashed the BIOS, but no go.

If you're certian that you have a faulty core, I'd get an RMA going. The chip should be under warranty and replaced.

Have you checked to see if it might be heat related? Try taking off the heatsink, reapplying some thermal paste, and cleaning the fans to see if it helps. I've seen wierdness where 1 core might inhibit overclocking, but never really seen a whole core just fail.

Does underclocking help the situation at all?

Markfw900, What are you doing with all of those computers?! And why did you just go to 2.8 with your q8200? That's not really it's top limit is it?

Crazy as it is, i wouldn't be suprised. I couldn't get mine any higher.

OP, does it do this in linux? Do you have a live-cd to try it out on?
