One 19" or two 17" lcds?

I personally would recommend dual monitors. I purchased an LCD to go with my CRT about 7 months ago, nothing as fancy as dual 17 inchers, but being able to use one screen for research and the other screen for word processing etc is great. Also when I have people over to my dorm room and they want to watch a movie they can just watch it on my crt and I can surf the net or whatever on my LCD. 17inches is an adequate size for an LCD and dual monitors increase productivity in my experience.

the fact that they picked a 5:4 resolution for a 4:3 screen is my second biggest source of dislike.

That only applies in the world of CRT's.

Since the LCD's native resolution is 1280x1024, the screen is physically sized in the correct ratio.

Yep... 19" vs 2x 17" is a no-brainer... go with the 17"s

20" vs 2x17" would be a tougher decision.

Another way to do it is to buy an LCD and a new or used crt. I only need a second screen to watch tv or dvds so I got a 19" lcd and a 21" crt. I watch tv and dvds on the crt and use the LCD for everything else. My 19" lcd (Original KDS RAD-9 not the P version) doesn't have the fastest response time in the world but I've never really noticed it playing games. I don't know if they make sub 25 response time 19" LCD's yet. If you can find a sub 25 response time 19" LCD, then that and a cheap 19" crt monitor may be your best solution.

totally depends on what your doing.... i mean... if your a programer/coder/graphics guy - 2 is always better

im on a 21" sun crt (sony fd trinitron tube) and id like to get a 2nd one so i dont have my tools pallete on the same menu as my photos when doing high rez photo editing.... but bigger is better. dual bigger is the best

btw - you can usually get off lease sun crt's on ebay for uder $300 shipped (which isnt bad cuz they weigh 86lbs each)

Dual 17s, although I personally like my setup of a 2001FP and a DiamondPoint NXM56. 20 and 15 inches respectively works out quite nicely.
