I'll start off. All I know is metal, so that's what I post :)

Metallica - Need I explain why? Once universally loved, now universally hated.
Guns & Roses - Potential to be rock legends ala Aerosmith, Ozzy, Stones, etc (aka, artists that still sell out large stadiums after 20 years of touring). It all fell apart because of Axel's disposition.

Others?

I was wondering what happened to G&R yesterday. Where is axel? Is he dead?

Metallica is utter crap now.

Oasis comes to mind, though it can't compare with those two.

Yeah, I had their new CD, but it was no more than perhaps 4 years ago...still, quite a while.

The Cure hasn't come out with anything in some time either ;)

fallen from grace? they still sell out better than the majority of bands out there. if they were playing small ampitheatres and clubs then maybe you could say they have fallen.

Stone Temple Pilots. They're like a freaking pop band now. I haven't listened to them after their CD Shangri LaDida or whatever. Blech.

relatively speaking, yes they are universally hated. they were huge 10-15 years ago. absolutely huge. gigantic beyond comparison. the undisputed kings of heavy metal, with credibility to boot. now what are they? the icons of the anti-mp3 movement, and their music is a disgrace to true metal fans everywhere. relative to what they once were, they're pitiful.

Relatively speaking they're still pulling in sold-out shows everywhere. I wouldn't use the term universal. And hated is too strong... just because you don't care for their style of music anymore doesn't make you hate the band. "They suck" does not mean you hate the guys. Think about it.

Besides, you only see the mp3-trading Internet junkies' opinions. Go on a MetallicA board and open your eyes.

Aerosmith
Rolling Stones
Whatever band Page & Plant are in at the moment
Metallica

Those are off the top of my head. If I sit down to think about it, I'm sure I could come up with more.

The Starland Vocal Band and ABBA. They were so big, surpassing the Beatles in importance, now look at them.
