I do have a good, and most of the time pretty reliable connection. My bandwidth is decent. Is there any way I can host the RFDCE site from my computer? At least while I am working on it and allowing other people to help. I'm not sure how to set the whole deal up. I am running Win2K pro. Can anyone help?
 
Install MS IIS (internet information server) as your web server. It is included with W2K (though probably not installed on your machine yet by default)

Internet Information Services 5.0 is not installed on Windows 2000 Professional by default. You can install IIS or select additional components by using the Add/Remove Programs application in Control Panel.

To install Internet Information Services

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel and start the Add/Remove Programs application.
Select Add/Remove Windows Components and then follow the on-screen instructions to install, remove, or add components to IIS.
Note

If you upgraded to Windows 2000, IIS 5.0 will be installed by default only if PWS was installed on your previous version of Windows.

IIS software checklist
Internet Information Services requires that the following software be installed on the computer prior to installation:

The Domain Name System (DNS) service installed on a computer in your intranet. If your intranet is small, you can use Hosts or Lmhosts files on all computers in your network. This step is optional, but it does allow users to use "friendly" text names instead of IP addresses. On the Internet, Web sites usually use the Domain Name System. If you register a domain name for your site, users can type your site's domain name in a browser to contact your site.
For security purposes, Microsoft recommends that all drives used with IIS be formatted with NTFS.

 
I don't really know much HTML or anything, so I use Frontpage right now. Does anyone know where I can "buy" Frontpage 2000? I currently have 98 and its not that great. SO if I could "buy" it, pref. by download, that would be nice. Other than that, I'l start adding graphics and stuff to my site in a bit. I'l post the link ASAP/ Maybe I can get the DNS working and use my domain name. www.RockfordDC.com

What would the name of my DNS server be? Do I have to set that up maunally on this machine, or do I just set the DNS server at Register.com to my IP? Any info?
 
If your going to use Frontpage (baah I hate that program, but hopefully youll do the final site without it) make sure you install the extensions, otherwise you wont be able to publish. As for your DNS, yes just go to register.com site and change the IP in their name servers to your IP, should work fine like that
 
Yeah. I changed the IP. I also changed the DNS server addresses. I am waiting for an email with link to go to to confirm changes. It also said that I needed to make sure the web hosting service makes the appropriate DNS server entries for my domain. How do I do that with IIS. Thanks a lot everyone...

If you want a free forwarding service you can use dhs.org or 2y.net(dont know if they are free). dhs.org has dynamic as well as static forwarding (?). I use the dyn.dhs.org. Everything is free and very easy. Check them out if you wish. They only wish that you join them and help others.

Argh!! At Register.com it won't let me change the DNS servers to what I think is my DNS address. When I go into the TCP/IP protocol properties for my @Home connection, I see all the appropriate addresses (I called up @home and had to manually enter this info cause Win2K wouldn't auto-detect it). It is better anyway, cause my IP never changes and i have all that info handy.

Under the properties, I see:

/Use the following IP address
IP address ################
subnet mask ###############
default gateway ###########

/Use the following DNS server addresses
Preferred DNS Server ##########
Alternate DNS " ###############

of coure, there are numbers. I tried specifying both of the DNS server addresses at REgister.com and it said "Error: Invalid entry or invalid characters. Please review and correct the entries below, and click 'Yes' to make the changes. "

"Note: If you are changing the DNS servers listed below to name servers other than register.com's DNS servers, the administrators of the new DNS servers must create the necessary entries for your domain name on their DNS servers. "

You are completely confused about DNS servers. It shouldn't be YOUR machine (unless you have DNS software installed and configured, which I highly doubt). Try using the two register.com addresses. Go into "manage my domain" then "Change IP". Put your IP address in. It may take a while for the change to take affect (hours if you're lucky, up to 3 days if your not).

OK. I didn't change the DNS servers. Hopefully it won't take too long for them to update the IP address then. And after that we'll see if I can get it up and running!!
