Once again Audi makes a car I want...

Being introduced tomorrow...

The 296hp S3:

And the new Audi A3 Sedan:

transverse layout car that is basically a golf-R with prettier parts , though at 39k i guess its not horribly unreasonable a value.

still though, if you are spending in that range, might as well get something more balanced. these new entry level FWD based cars (like this and the CLA) are just not going to feel the same as a longitudinal layout audi, or a RWD mercedes C class that they are pretty much going to move upmarket..

Propelled by the ubiquitous 2.0-liter TFSI engine, the S3 sedan with six-speed S-tronic should reach 60 miles per hour from a stop in 4.7 seconds. The unit here is tuned to produce 296 SAE horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque

Remember when the ubiquitous VW/Audi motor was a 1.8L turbo with like 180 horsepower. How times have changed.

Oh, and this > BMW 1 series.

a bmw 228i / 235i when they replace the 1 series next year willl have the n20/26 as base which realistically produces 265-270hp, and is RWD.

a transverse layout, haldex AWD s3 vs a 228i on a RWD longitudinal platform which will probably cost similar , i wouldn't be so quick to judge.

I should have clarified. My comment was only about design. I'd rather drive the BMW any day of the week, and twice on Sundays, but damn it's ugly.

The interior is horrible, no thanks. For 40k, likely ballooning up with normal options that should be standard, I'd rather find a few more grand and get a 335i or even an s4.

Uh no, I'd take a RWD car vs a FWD that "directs power to the rear when the front wheels slip". If you don't care about handling, sure maybe this is better.

Hmm, it looks exactly like every other Audi... what a shock.

This is a legitimate criticism but to my eyes their signature look is very pleasant, and we already know it ages well (since their current cars are really more or less refinements of the same signature elements they have been using since the 1980s). I'd probably rather have pretty-but-conservative rather than ungainly-but-striking. The Audis over the last decade will almost certainly be better-regarded by history than, say, their Chris Bangle BMW counterparts (and I own one of the latter).

Not a fan of new Audi styling, bit too aggressive for my taste.

Also I cannot stand the new interiors. I don't know what Audi was thinking when they decided to follow "BMW interior theme" or whatever you want to call that design language. It's horrible and tacky.

I love it. Audi is finally making a good small sedan. The A4 kept getting bigger and bigger with every generation.

Pending price, the S3 or new WRX may be possible additions to the list!

wth?! how can you compare a S3 to a WRX, at least in price point? WRX is a high 20's car. S3 will cost 39K+

now if you meant the WRX STi, then that's more comparable cost wise

The S3 looks like it should be a fun car. My next car will be a fun car as my Miata gets turned more into a track rat. 1-series coupe, BRZ, WRX, S3, Mustang GT, used Cayman, used Corvette, etc. will all be considered. Cost isn't that important in the grand scheme.. just as long as its under budget, which is why you get a 25k BRZ up to a 45k used Cayman.

I am 6'4" - this is not the car for me.

I'm 6'5" and fit just fine in the current A3 and GTI. I like that Audi is offering a car the size of the original A4 again.

If I actually needed a car, the S3 would be high in my list to test drive ... Sven with the no manual option (although wish it was an option).

Even if you compared the STi, that's a rally inspired power house with no real hints of sophistication or luxury.
