Once a year oil change possible?

JEDI

Lifer
I drive 15k miles/yr. (90% hwy)

Is it possible to do once a year oil changes?

maybe with Mobil-1 Extended (5w20)? if so, what oil filter to use?

In general, I don't recommend going more than 6 months per oil change as issues from condensation tend to come into play by that amount of time even if there aren't a lot of miles traveled.

Unless you are getting oil analysis done, I strongly recommend against any interval that is longer than the interval listed in your car's owner's manual.

I wouldn't think that would be too good for your car to change it once ever 15K miles like you said. I would change it every 3K miles, or if you go with synthetic, every 6K.

Recomended read about oil: http://briskoda.net/maintenanc...stions-answered/99433/

From the article:

10) How important is it to change oil regularly? What are the implications of failing to do so?

It is only really important to change oil regularly if the engine covers a low annual mileage made up of slow, short runs. This is being cruel to the oil and the engine! The oil, regardless of its quality, gets full of fuel and water vapour, and never gets the chance to evaporate it all off with a long fast run. The consequences are corrosion, ring and bore wear. It is essential to do a change at least once a year, even if the recommended mileage hasn?t been covered. On the other hand, if you eat up the miles on long blasts the engine and its oil will love it, so with a top-quality oil it is OK to cheat a little on oil drain periods.

Btw, my car, a new diesel car, has variable oil change interval, every 2 years or 30 000 km (18 600 miles) - witchever comes first. I think most people change their oil far more often than needed.

Ahhh regular oil can do 5k in most cars and syn 8-10k as well.

3k and 6k is way over kill and will not help most cars/trucks.

How much oil does your car take? A little 4-cylinder gasoline engine with only 4 quarts of oil will suffer degradation long before the same engine with a 7 quart reservoir. Diesel engines, due to their high compression and resultant tendency towards increased blow-by contamination of oil, tend to have much larger oil reservoirs than gasoline engines. It is not a good idea to use a Diesel as a guide for proper maintenance of a gasoline engine.

Maybe on an older vehicle but new vehicles don't need that. I try to change mine after around 3k but I also have 150k on the vehicle.

What engine and how much oil does it hold?

My sister-in-law has a A4 with the V6. I do 10k or 1 year on it with syn. But it also holds 7 quarts of oil. Some newwer cars hold a lot more oil then older ones.

3 months was recently proven to be correct on how often oil should be changed in a car. After that the additives started to seperate more and more, not to mention the acid buildup.

What type of oil? Link to proof?

I don't know, and I don't really care since im newer going to change oil myself. Its a 1.9 TDI Pumpe-Düse engine form VW. I had a car with 1.3 litre petrol engine before and changed once a year, newer any problem there. Sold the car it after 115K kilometers in 10 years, so it was run at the worst possible conditions (many short trips).

At least thats whet the oils sellers and car repair shops want you to believe. Some germans have found that you newer need to change the oil at all (just the filter and topping it up).

Never Change Your Oil?

Depends.

With the extended, you can go a year easily - you should just send a sample in each time you change your filter. You should still change the filter every 3K miles.

I looked up the specs on the required oil for that TDI, it's very good stuff. 🙂

For most people, they can probably get away with yearly oil changes just fine if they use good synthetic oil. I view an oil change as cheap insurance and tend to have higher-mileage cars (current cars have 125,000 miles, 160,000 miles, and 140,000 miles on them) so I pay more attention to oil changes. Still, I recommend every 6 months because it can't hurt and it's relatively cheap.

ZV has the same mentality about changing oil that I do, a pragmatic one. Considering the cost of operating the vehicle (more so now than ever due to rising fuel costs), changing the oil on a regular 3k-5k basis is only marginally more expensive than waiting longer. It's quite obvious that changing the oil frequently will not cause any harm to your motor (as long as you use decent product, and do the work competently), but on the flip side, going on long intervals between changes can be detrimental depending on the exact circumstances (way too many things to list here, but it should be obvious).

All that said, if you're going 7k+ IMHO, get a paraffin-based oil. Amsoil, Schaeffer's, Royal Purple. I believe these are known as true group-IV products.
