Based on evidence taken from my own group of friends, no, that's absolutely not true.

Friend A: Has used virtually every drug under the sun; tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, meth, PCP, LSD, mushrooms, salvia and lots and lots of different prescription drugs (both narcotic and non-narcotic). Currently in the military, was completely sober during his stint in Iraq last year, came back and began drinking and doing dip again, but off the harder drugs as they test for those.

Friend B: A long and troubling history with drugs, he spent several months living on the street selling marijuana and crystal meth. He used crystal habitually, saying that he would go weeks without sleeping. Currently has been completely free of methamphetamines for 4 years, though he still drinks alcohol and smokes marijuana regularly, as well as occasionally using cocaine. Often seems to be addicted to marijuana, spending much of his time either smoking or looking for pot.

Friend C: Similar to friend A, experimented with everything he could get his hands on from a young age, became addicted to heroin in his late teen years. Currently he is sober from heroin for 3 years after attending rehab. Still drinks and smokes, occasionally uses cocaine.

So simply based on what I've seen of drugs, I think it's preposterous to say "once a junkie, always a junkie." However, I do see that people who were addicted to drugs will continue using substances, even if it's not as hard as whatever they were addicted to.

er, not sure what your definition of "junkie" is but AFAIK A,B, and C were and still are junkies...

Hard drugs like marijuana? What's the gateway drug then, sugar?

I think about the only thing out there that's pretty much impossible to quit is heroin. From what I've read, a junkie is looking at 2 weeks of living hell when withdrawing from it, with symptoms so severe they can actually be fatal.

i don't consider an alcoholic a junkie but the success rate of quitting permanently is pretty low.

I've been around 12 step recovery programs my whole life. Junkies can get off and stay off drugs, but as has been previously mentioned they really have to hit rock bottom first. I know many former addicts that have been clean for decades (including a close family member).

Once an addict, always an addict, just like once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic.

Those people with "addictive personalities" will always have the addiction, even though they never indulge again.

One drink or one fix could be enough to send a recovering addict back into the depths of addiction all over again.

I think a lot of you are confusing someone who has used drugs with someone who has become heavily addicted. As far as I'm concerned, a "junkie" would be someone physically or heavily psychologically addicted to a drug and spends much of their time using and/or looking for ways to use the drug. "My friend tried all sorts of a, b, c and d and is fine" doesn't constitute "junkie." Now, that's not saying the OP's statement is true (it's not), but keep to the terminology if you're looking to provide anything more than "Duuuuuude! My friend..." stories to the discussion.

But as far as the absolute in the title, it should be pretty obvious to anyone with a clue that it's completely false.

im one of the very rare cases of people who kicked hard drugs... i kicked a very serious opiate addiction... i was IVing heroin, oxycodone, hydromorphone, morphine... i enrolled in a methadone clinic and told them i wanted to detox as quick as possible.... i went cold turkey after there idea of a fast detox was dropping me 1-2mg per day, and i was on a 100mg dose.... 100mg of methadone is roughly equivelent to 400mg of morphine.... it would have taken forever to detox they wanted me to...

i was sick enough from the withrawal that i will never ever be addicted to a drug again, besides i just had my second little girl on the 11th, so i cant be messing around any more... it's time to grow up and be a good parent....

but yeah, i've been clean for about 3 months now...

So going by your numbers, you were on a 400mg/day morphine equivalent, which means you would've needed a 1-200mg/day heroin dose (maybe less). That's not much of a "very serious opiate addiction" if you don't mind my saying.

it was bad.... sometimes i would bang H or oxys while on the methadone as well...

i was sick for a month when i stopped cold turkey.

i was also abusing xanax, i had a script for a 120 a month, and i would eat 5-8 2mg bars at a time...on top of the opiates.

Heh... Sick for a month? And you've only been clean for three months? You should've looked into Suboxone. :)

I'm another one of those people who kicked hard. I didn't get quite as bad, but I had a fairly serious oxy problem back in high school. Serious as in I almost died and didn't graduate on time. Since then, I haven't touched them. It's been four years now, and I can honestly say I would never go back to doing anything like that again.

I've also had a bit of trouble with coke, but that ended about two years ago with me abandoning a large number of 'friends'.

I have a fairly addictive personality, but I'm content with a glass of cab sauv and a joint.

QFT....

I don't exactly go into withdrawal and start fiending for a hit when my stash runs out. It's just something you can get used to, like having a drink after work or a cigarette in the afternoon.

shit, my stomach feels like shit in the morning, i get these weird heartburn/acidic stomach type thing and evry time a bong rip makes it go away.

call it what you want but i like weed and i like when its around.

but smoke too much and you go broke :p

The problem with that is that you'll never get to fully appreciate the effects of a particular drug because you have to try it several times, often in succession.

BTW, I've never done any drugs in my entire life.

...So how do you know?

read about it.

it's true, i've also been semi addicted to methamphetimine, but it was easy to kick....

i would binge and stay up for up to a week at a time, and then crash for a week, and do it again the next week... i wasn't to the point of doing it ALL the time... but i was a step away...
it was nothing compared to quitting opiates.
