How good is onboard video nowadays compared to an old Radeon 9600pro?

If you go with the AMD/ATI 780G chipset, it will be much faster than your old 9600Pro card. 🙂

All it needs to do is run Sims 2 for the next year until my sister moves out of the house, and then the only people using the computer will be my parents. So if the 9600pro can handle Sims, then you're saying that the onboard will be good enough too then.

You are misinterpreting the answer. The typical "onboard" video is Intel's, and typically, a 1999 model TNT video card is better (actually has hardware T&L, which Intel doesn't usually include). Only nVIDIA Nforce and ATI Xpress (AMD) onboard video is potentially comparable to the lowest grades of old Radeon 9600, such as the 9600 SE. For the past three years, ATI chipsets have had the best video, and this year, they really raised the bar, so only the 2400 IGP beats a 9600 Pro (so far, TTBOMK, no Nforce IGP is quite so good).
