Onboard video

Does all onboard video take away system memory? I am asking this because a friend is building a new computer. It is only going to be used for office work and stuff. So I recommended a motherboard with a 6100 onboard. He could either just use the onboard or use his old MX 420. Will one of them give better 2D performance?

Yes, they all use system memory.
If he's going to a newer board, he can't use an AGP card.
Vista (formerly Longhorn) from MS will require a DX9 capable video card for all of it's functions to operate (the 6100 onboard is DX9)...

vista will not require dx9 at all. it is only if you turn on the enchanced avalon stuff (that ipersonally would never turn on).

i've run betas on geforce4 mxes fine.

there arent very many motherboards with integrated video now that dont use system memory as system memory is dirt cheap.

i do know that jetway makes an ati rs480 board with 32mb ddr buffer. newegg used to sell it (i had one) though i am not sure they still sell that model.

if he gets a 6100 it will be better to just use the onboard than a mx420 though. though i would recommend a rs480 if you want integrated as its a bit faster on 3d as i believe it has more pipes. get the rs480 + ULI south bridge combo to get HD audio as well.

That's why I specified "for all of it's functions to operate".

You can't run an MX420 on a 6100 board AFAIK, they are all PCIe...

I recently picked up the MSI RS482M-IL (socket 754) for $68.50 and a Sempron 2500 for $60.00 from mwave. Cheap! And it works very well. I am impressed with the quality of the on-board video (though this board is VGA only), and from the 1 GB of memory the missing 64MB for the video is nothing to worry about.

I see the motherboard has gone down a few bucks and the chip up a few since I bought them. Still, quite a bargain for a fast machine (with 64-bit compatibility to boot).

i doubt he would buy vista to use on that pc anyways so its a non issue. by the time wide adoption of vista comes around and he has a real need to upgrade his os that pc will be severely obsolete.

The built in video in the 6100 is going to be a bit more powerful/faster than a geforce 4 mx420 (the castrated 64-bit version of the gf4mx) plus it's "free" so might as well use it.

if you do get a 6100 or rs480 though, since they do not have any frame buffer, you probably want to get a socket 939 chip with dual channel.

getting dual channel on those, would speed up the 3d a lot if he ever did want to play a game. the 2d though would be unaffected so if you are sure he'll never play games a sempron on a s754 board would suffice (as someone else said they had done)
