Onboard video question

OK, I put a system together about a year and a half ago, and the motherboard (AOpen AX4GE Max) that works off the Intel 845 GE chipset and uses the Intel Extreme Graphics onboard video. At first, I was pretty surprised with how well the onboard video worked, but now I want to be able to up the resolution more and get better FPS, so I am wondering around what level card is my onboard equivalent to now so that when I am looking at buying I can know what is better.

intel onboard is about like a geforce2 or a gf4 mx card, much slower than even a geforce3 ti.

For under $100, a used gf4 ti4200 - 4600 would be a huge leap in power, and will probably let you play even Doom3 at maybe 800x600 with eye candy turned down.

For under $200, the best choice hands down is a 9800 Pro 128 MB RAM, 256-bit memory path. This should let you play Doom3 at 800x600 with eye candy turned way up, though your CPU might be a bottleneck if it's less than 2.4 GHz.

To play Doom3 at 1024 x 768 or higher, you need a A64 3200+ or P4 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, and a 6800 GT video card.

WHA?

You don't need near that for D3.

The rest of my system specs are as follows:
2.4B P4
512Mb Pc2700 Ram

Think that's all that's really important, might be switching to a new mobo but haven't decided yet.

The HardOCP benchmarks with a P4 3.2 GHz, 2 GB RAM show a 9800XT and fx5950 only being playable at 1024x768 (43-46 fps high quality, 50 fps medium quality), so a slower card and/or slower processor won't be playable at high quality, possibly not even medium.
