Onboard Via ac'97 or soundblaster pci 16?

Just bought a new motherboard. However I've had a very old sound card that ive used for years and is still quite reliable.

However the new mobo has onboard sound, ADI 1980 6-channel CODEC (ac'97)and boasts a nifty S/PDIF out interface. Could this possibly be better than my sb16? The onboard is a lot newer, and my baby is really really old. When I tried the onboard, I could hear a lot of background sound though, and it doesn't have hardware bass and treble adjustments like my sb16.

I'd think as the SB doesn't have surround...you can find EQ controls for the onboard sound via software...any event the best thing to do is try both and keep the one that your ears like 😉

yeah sb definately does not have surround sound. And my ears definately like the SB (probably because theyre used to it). But I've got 2 speaker with subwoofer system anyways surround would probably do me no good.

the on-board probably have a lot of hiss if you plug in your headphones

or you can always use both, and disable the other one in windows. i plug in my speakers and headphones that way

Neither option is really a good choice. You might just grab an SB Live! from NewEgg for ~$30, or if you don't want to spend much at all look for a used card in the For Sale/Trade Forum.
