How good normally is onboard sound in general? I am upgrading my PC from top to bottom and I have planned to pay for an Audigy 4 in my budget but then i realised the motherboard i was getting ( http://www.asrock.com.tw/product/product_939Dual-SATA2.htm) already had onboard sound. Is there that much of a difference in quality that i shouldnt discard the Audigy and spend the cash on the other components instead? Im using Live 5.1 at the minute, yeah i know very old! Could the onboard sound not just do the job instead? I do listen to a lot of music though!

it's true that it depends on the speakers but i'll tell you that with a good speakers and i don't mean like the high end ones that costs 200$, just some speakers that cost 30$, you can actually hear the difference between onboard and audigy.

Do you play games like Counter-Strike? If you do, it would be a good idea to get the sound for the precision. But if your just listening to music... what kind of music do u listen to?

Here's what you do. Don't buy the sound card and use onboard sound. If it does not sound good to your own ears with your own headphones/speakers, then buy a soundcard. If it sounds fine to you, then you saved some money.
