Onboard sound, what the % lost in speed?

I'm currently running on a Barton2500XP and Asus A7N8X DX (onboard sound card via the Soundstorm southbridge ) I've done some research and it seems it the only onboard option on the market that doesn't take some % of the cpu to run...

Now my question. I want to change my mobo and cpu..--->AMD 64 3200 (939) ans MSI K8N NEO2 platinium.
How much cpu power does the onboard sound card takes? see---> how much FPS will i lose in game like DOOM3 for exemple.

Overall... Insignificant.

In Doom 3... Absolutely zero. Doom 3 is programmed so that the cpu does all the audio processing.

ok..in toher game like WC3 or the upcoming HL2? will i see something? Do i need to buy a sound card? I only use a 2.1 system and most of the time headphone

Like I said... It's insignificant with today's powerful processors.

I'll second that. You're talking 2-3% if that. What the sound card does get you is things like environmental sound (EAX, etc.). Although I understand that Doom3 doesn?t use it.

Ok so if I understand correclty..unless I do some 5.1 or complex effect of this kind i dont need to worry with the onboard sound card.

thank for the quick answers.

Yup...if you don't have a 5.1 setup and don't desire EAX, then you'd be a moron to buy a seperate sound card.
