Onboard RAID

I've been reading here and there that the onboard RAID found on a lot of motherboards are not very good in quality. Is this really true? Should I definitely spring for a RAID controller card? Is the performance gap significant?

I'm looking at the Gigabyte GA-7VAXP1.2 AMD mobo in the ABS Bravado 2230. Is it worth going with RAID on this mobo?

OnBoard RAID is software raid, what raid you planning on running? I'm running RAID 0, don't expect it to knock your socks off, but it is snappier, and has faster loading times.
It is however alot less expensive than having to buy a raid card along with the motherboard. Besides you can run without the raid, and have 8eide devices. Most motherboards with raid only cost about $10 more than the non-raid versions, well worth it imo

I would be running RAID 0.

Basically, it's coming down to this. I have a budget and I have priced one Intel system and one AMD system. Basically, all the specs are the same, except that the AMD has RAID while the Intel does not. Is it worth going AMD for the software RAID? It would be running two WD SE 120GB drives. The Intel would be running a single WD SE 120GB drive. Otherwise, the same, including price. Any opinions?

If you need the Extra HD spce, then I would go for the RAID, not to mention the extra devices you can run on the Raid controller.

If you do alot of gaming, Video, and Photochop, then you might need to exta space. Go with what suits you the best.

If you get 240 gig total(AMD system) for the same price as 120 gig (Intel system) , then of course get the AMD system. Raid will buy you a little performance also (as mentioned above)
