At the moment I have 2 400GB, 1 200GB SATA and 1 300GB ATA100 seagate 7200.8. I'm planning on eventually buying 2 more 400GB to form a 1.6TB raid 5 array and use the 300 ata100 as my main drive with hte 200 going into my future fanless SFF. I'm wondering if I use my MB's (MSI neo plantinium 4 ultra) onboard raid controller will I be bound to it if I wanted to upgrade the MB in the future? What I'm saying is if I were to buy a different motherboard in 6 months would I loss all the data on the raid because I would have to recreate it on the new MB?

What Kensai said. If you plan to change MBs soon you probably should get a cheap PCI controller.

Also note you need _3_ more 400 GB (5 total) for a 1.6 TB RAID5, since you lose the space of one drive for the parity.
