Onboard RAID or PCI?

I've been told by some people that onboard RAID performs better than PCI RAID and vise versa. Who's right? Further, if PCI performs better, what is a good brand (Abit, for example?)?

Thanks,

Adam

I agree w/ salt. I have used onboard promise, highpoint, and AMI controllers, and then compared them to my promise FT100TX2. You really see a small difference in benchmarks. I doubt you would ever notice the difference.

Having had this point beat into me (by Pariah, IIRC), I should point out that the Escalade controller cards perform far, far better than the Promise and Highpoint ones. They're also more expensive, though the lower-end ones still perform quite well and only cost around $100.

Indeed. I was looking at Escalade RAID cards earlier today, until I ordered a laptop. Damn Hot Deals forum. 😀

Anyway, the Escalade 6410 is under $100. The newer 7400 series are a lot more, but include such nifty features as ATA/100 support & 64-bit PCI for those of us with high-end motherboards.
