On Windows 98 not SE, which DirectX version should I load?

My system only have DirectX 5 = 4.05.01.1998.

Should I use version 7 or 8? According to Microsoft's site, once a version is loaded, you can't uninstall it so please let me know which version to load.

DirectX 7.0A for the moment until video card drivers for DX8 stabilise. There are very few games that require DirectX 8 at the moment, although MechWarrior 4 comes to mind.
