What's the difference between a "hit" and a "visit"??

My page stats lists both.

Might have something to do with repeat visits to the site. I'm not too sure, though. People visit the same site several times. Maybe when someone first goes to the site, it increments both, but maybe on subsequent visits, it only increments one of the counters.

hit: basically any time anyone looks at anything on your site, it's a hit. loada page, that's a hit. load the images for that page, each of them is a hit. A visit is when a user comes to the site, loads a few pages, browses the site for a litte while, then leaves. A group of hits occuring in a short timespan by the same IP address is a visit.
