On the verge of buying a Dell 2405

Ok guys. I know i should just get it. I do have a certain situation here though...

I am going to use this as my tv and my gaming lcd in my bedroom. The tv will have digital cable ran to it via a tv tuner card and will be powered by my 9800 pro until i can get a newer card. I will be around 10 feet away from it when lying down in my bed. I will be about 2 to 3 feet away from it when gaming. Is this lcd good at that distance? Can you see dvds and tv at a decent resolution?

I have to do this or leave my desk out in my loft and look all cluttered with my 51 inch hitachi in the room. I dont want to do that. I would rather get a decent monitor and use my pc as the pvr box/gaming box.

LMK what you think!

Its good for Gameing .. its awsome for gaming its the best gaming LCD ... BUT ... the problem is if you want your games to look the best you will want to play them at 1920x1200 rez .. 🙂 Now i am just getting away with this rez on a 6800GT AT Ultra speeds 400/1100

a 9800 wont do it. Movie look awsome on this thing and i also use it as a TV watching it from my Bed ive had this thing for 1 month now and still not 1 single dead pixel or 1 single problem .. the best computer part ive ever got. 🙂 Time to make everyone go WOW when they see your system!

Good luck with your new monitor.

Exactly what i wanted to hear. I know i have to get a new video card... that is a given... but i dont have the loot for both right now, and it can wait another two weeks to get a decent video card to make sure it runs at native while playing games. Will an x800xl do it?

GTO^2 then unlock and OC, if youre on a budget like that is my reccomendations. the higher clockspeeds will really tell compared to the x800XL. 400/490? vs 500-600 core / 600 mem on the GTO^2

Yes fast ram helps at the 1920x1200 rez ... and well fast everything helps really ... FEAR is a tuff game to run at 1920x1200 but i just pull it off with lowering some settings a little.

In gaming, you'll need a good video card.

But I don't think a 24" at 10ft will look very good.

I have a tv in my room that is a 27 inch. It isnt even a flat panel. So, i think with the widescreen, it will be better, not to mention it will be probably running at non native res... but then again, i will just have to set it up to see what is the best. I went to sams club last night, and looked at the samsung 23 inch and it looked fine from 10 feet away. I dont need a huge tv in my bedroom, just something to put me to sleep and maybe watch a late night movie on. If i want a full viewing experience, i will watch my 51 inch hitachi. See what i am saying? I just need to clean up my loft of my computer, cause the desk is huge and its cluttering the room. The pc in the bedroom will be a better idea.

Thanks

This is a great gaming monitor, but in my experience, don't use a monitor as a tv. Most tv tuner setups aren't feature loaded and the quality of the monitor shows you just how crappy tv quality really is. Unless you're getting something like an HD wonder, I would use a tv for tv purposes and a monitor for monitor purposes. As far as your card goes, 1920x1200 is a MASSIVE gaming resolution (it's what I run 😀) but I wouldn't be running it if not for my 2xbfg 7800gtx's and 2gb ram. Keep in mind, it requires 3x the graphics power of 1024x768, my sli is barely enough to keep battlefield 2 running at a decent rate at that res. If you can only afford either the monitor or the card, just save for a little while until you can get both. They'll both be cheaper by then too 😛

My 7800GT barely keeps up, a GTO2 or whatever isnt going to cut it unless your willing to drop down to medium settings. And who would want to upgrade TO medium settings?

So who is using a 2405 and gaming at non-native res? Anyone care to share their experiences?

I have a feeling running at lower-than-native res on this thing wouldn't be the end of the world.

Frankly, I want to get one and keep my 18" LCD for newer games 🙂

1680x1050 looks fine on the 2405 actually.

I too am considering this move for my kids comps. I'm not worried about getting a perfromance card, but my concerns are mainly:

1) Is watching tv and dvd any good on this?
2) What are you using for a tuner?

I personally don't buy into the hype of "you have to game as the same native res. as your monitor" grou. I have the Dell 2001 and my desktop is of course 1600x1200, but if I can't play a game in 1600x1200 and I have to drop the resolution, I still think it looks just fine.

I, for one, think the 9800pro would be fine with that monitor. Truw, like they say, you won't be able to game at the highest resolutions, but all but the very top cards would have trouble with that.

Don't sweat the video card update for now, if you're happy with how your games perform. IMHO.

There you go.... thanks 🙂

i bet you can see tv just fine on it. i've got a 2005 and i can see it when laying on my bed about 10 feet away just fine.

I just watched Batman Begins on my 2405 and it looked fine from 10ish feet away... occasionally I'll play Chronicles of Riddick with a control pad, and it looks fine, although I cannot stress enough the importance of the best possible video card(s) available today if you're going to be gaming at 1680 x 1050 or higher... you'll need two of the best if you plan on playing the newest games at resolutions higher than that.

I've been gaming on my 2405 at 1024x768....because I have a 9600XT. Looks fine, I love the widescreen. I'm building a brand new rig around Christmas with a 7800GTX so I'll be able to game at 1920x1200 in newer games(HL2, Far Cry, Doom 3). So far I've played Call of Duty and Halo at 1024x768, no problems whatsoever.

Personally I would get a 7800GT. I had a 6600GT before I got the monitor and I could play most games but without any AA and it was slow. I think you should try to get as much of a jump as you can afford. I got in on the $299 7800GT deal last week and if you wait you should be able to pcik one up at that price. It should definitely be worth the extra $40.

Those GTO^2s were awesome when they were $199 but at the $250+ they now cost I don't know if it's such a good deal. Don't get me wrong it's still a good deal at $250 but I think it will require upgrading again sooner than I would like.

I would rather use a something like 960x600 personally whenever possible as it divides the native 1920x1200 evenly and should scale very well.

I would recommend a 7800GT as the bare MINIMUM.

Mine can play D3,Q4,HL2 FarCry etc. at 1920x1200 4aa 8af at high quality with acceptable frame rates. I'm not saying it doesnt get sluggish every once in awhile while playing Q4, but it's more then playable. If I had my druthers I would have paid the extra $75 and purchased a GTX.

I am however going to make the move to SLI, and will be adding another GT within the next 6 months.

And I want to say that Q4 is amazing at 1920x1200, I have never seen better graphics. It's weird though, from far away the texture looks amazing, but when you get up close some look down right ugly.
