A 1950xt is on average 50-60% faster than a 7800gtx at 1600x1200, and the difference is even higher with AA enabled. Those two cards are nowhere comparable in performance, some people on this thread are just clueless. If there was a decent midrange DX10 card available along with some decent DX10 games, then you could make an argument that nothing from the last generation of cards is worth getting. But that's simply not the case right now. At the moment the 1950xt can be found for about $150, and it blows away any other card at that price point. If you can sell your 7800gtx for about $100, you could be getting a noticeable difference in performance and features for about $50.

I bought a X1950XT for $167 and it knocks the socks off my X800XT. A very good deal! The only knock against it is the fan noise/temps. I installed a Zalman VF 900 on it and it runs like a champ.

I initially had serious heat/noise problems with mine but now that it's in my antec 900 case it gets much better ventilation and the fan rarely spools up over 32%.

how long has he had the card? I'm assuming it's a 256mb? Go for it no matter what if it's 512. what are its max clocks using ati tool? My max is 681 core and 999 memory, but I can't finish 3dmark 06 over 668 core and 960+- memory. If he has similar numbers to mine and the card is fairly new then that is a great deal. I paid 149+6 shipping AR, but it was a $30 rebate from sapphire so I could very well end up with no rebate and 185 for my card. I haven't seen a new x1950xt under 185 in a while and it doesn't look like they'll be back.

I think going the 1950 route isn't such a bad idea.

While I wish I had an 8800GTS-320, it seems to have enough problems in some high-end games that it caused me to pause buying it. On various benchmarks that use larger textures, the 320 simply tanks. Nvidia claims these are driver problems
and they'll fix them...but who knows how long that takes?

I'm in even a worse situation than the OP -- I have a 7800GT-256MB. While I would be missing out on DX10, it isn't really a stupid move to do a slight, cheap upgrade now (1950Pro) then wait a year or so for Nvidia & ATIs 2nd gen DX10 cards to stabalize and get a real upgrade. I don't think I can stand another year of gaming on this 7800GT. The 1950 is so cheap right now, especially if you resell your old hardware, that it's almost a no-brainer in certain situations.

Edit -- Whoops, I was thinking of the 1950XTX, not the 1950Pro. Referring to Tom's VGA charts, while the 1950Pro is faster than my 7800GT, it's not fast enough to warrant an upgrade, no matter how cheap. The XTX is a nice card, but costs so much I might as well buy an 8800GTS for that price. Oh well, woe is me =) I continue to research.

I had a 7900GT CO and got a 1950XT from newegg for $155 when the paypal coupon was floating around.

I haven't compared the two side by side, since the 1950XT was for a new rig.

But that thing runs hot. REAL hot. Like 94C. I was looking for flames coming out the back of the case.

Case has acceptable cooling. Card just runs super hot and is normal. But it still makes me a little uneasy.

you can get a new x1950 xt for around $180-190 right now. I would hold off on those, however, since in jan-feb 08 we should see 2950 pro and 8700 gts come out VERY close to that price point. either pick up a used card on fs/ft or pm me if you can't find one and I can put you in touch with somebody who might sell you a very strong x19xx 512 mb card used that you can use as a stopgap. Be careful with good stopgaps, however, since I'm now thinking about just keeping my card for a year or two instead of flipping it in a few months and you might also fall victim to this "responsibility" virus that is running around.

Your gpu fan is probably not ramping up properly if it is getting to 94c on a consisten basis. run ati tool and look at the gpu fan settings. You should be at 27% up to 70c (very quiet), 32 % up to 80c, 50 % or so at 88c, gradually ramping up fan speed to high 60's % at 97c, then 100% at 100c. You can set it to try to keep the gpu at a constant temp, too.

7950 is out on newegg for $140 AR. Thats a heck of a price for the 256MB version. There is a 512MB x1950xt by GeCube (never heard of them) for $194.
