Yesterday I thought about creating a thread about ways to combat acne. Well, today I did a search on Google, and I found a site that was very informative: http://www.niams.nih.gov/hi/topics/acne/acne.htm. If you're suffering from acne, and want to know more about it, it's a good read.

For those of you how have had/have acne, I was wondering if you could share you experiences controlling or defeating this condition.

A pimpled friend of mine said diet is very important. Soda made him get lots of zits, as did chocolate and some oily foods.

Avoid acne drugs if possible

Here's what worked best for me when I suffered it not too long ago: Benzoyl peroxide wash -- use it like 3x daily and it'll help a lot, especially if you have oily skin. See a dermatologist and get some Retin-A (tretinoin) prescribed for you (this stuff is $$$$ so make sure you got a good rx plan), it works GREAT -- but can take weeks before noticing any results. Retin-A not only heals old scars, but prevents new blister-like acne from forming. Put it on before you sleep.

If you live in a humid environment, you are pretty much screwed. Do the best you can by staying in AC rooms as much as possible.

Accutane is nasty, but it was the only thing that worked in my case. I had bad cystic acne on my back and some on my face as a teenager.

I agree with the diet advice, even though a lot of people say it's a myth. Chocolate, peanuts and most oily foods were bad for me. When I stuck to bland simple foods that seemed to work best.

Another thing was anything to excess triggered my acne. If I washed too much or too little it got worse. If I used too much topical stuff it got worse. I think everyone has to find a happy medium with there own skin.

By the time you figure out what works for you, you will have grown out of it. That's part of growing up I guess.

Good Luck,

People are always saying diet doesn't make a difference, but I know it does! If I eat chocolate, I see an almost instant reaction. Plus, since I eat mostly fruits and vegetables, my skin looks MUCH healthier. It's probably all that greasy food from those adolescent years that starts it off!

The iodine in salt is a major skin irritant. This is why many greasy foods, which are also very salty, cause skin reactions. Try using sea salt or kosher salt, which contain no iodine, when cooking.

Also, I found that foods rich in vitamin E caused pimples. This would be greasy foods (again), chocolate, and peanuts.

I tried all kinds of creams, pills, nothing worked for me except Accutane. It sucked taking it because of the side effects, but it sure did clear up the acne.

In addition to Diet, drink LOTS OF WATER. I heard this is supposed to help. Like at least 3-4 glasses a day (Which you should be doing anywayz.)

Basically alot of these acne medications are mild acids. They will reduce the appearance of scares by helping to clear the dead skin on the surface. With the layers of dead skin gone the pock marks appear smaller and shallower.

I had really bad acne on my back, and none of the standard treatments helped. All the acne treatments can be used on any skin with acne though. As far as I know there aren't any that are specifically for the face. That's just were most people worry about acne.

Accutane worked wonders for my acne. Cleared it up in a matter of months and I've had very few since.

Go to your dermotologist to get specific information and Rx medications to combat the problem. "Remember: Knowing is half the battle!"

There are different types of acne. The most common is NOT effected by diet, trust me.

My acne isnt severe or mild, its inbetween. Ive been on everything except accutane. Nothing worked that well. So now Im using that Proactive stuff, it really does work, but you gotta do it twice a day every day or the acne will come back.

Retin A helps reduce scars/wrinkles, it helps some but not much. Retin A is the main substance in all those anti aging/anti wrinkle creams.
