On May 1st, 2001 I completed my 1st Seti Work Unit.

It took for ever to complete, running the GUI Client. My mentors (read recruiters, WIZ and Assimilator1) gave me orders to ditch the GUI and switch to the CLI ... has sort of a familiar ring to a lot of you I bet. Ever since that 1st Seti Work Unit, all of my personal Work Units have been done with the CLI Client. :)

I have lost track of my exact membership number, and I see where Soni has cropped his archives :( , but I believe I was Team AnandTech SETI's 869th member. :)

So I guess you would say I making a "self-promoting" HAPPY SETI BIRTHDAY TO SMOKEBALL thread. :D

We have certainly grown over the course of the last year. Early on I grew attached to this project and to this team. It has now become my main activity ... (I can hear the groans with that comment). Ha :)

Hellburner gave me sort of a promotion about 8 or 9 months ago and I have been functioning as your "Membership Administrator". I've started a "new" tradition here where all new members get a personalize e-mail welcoming them to the team. In conjunction with this I also create a "Welcome Thread" in the forums. I think it is real important that we make new members feel comfortable with their new found teammates. :)

I've also tried to add my little input to the stats and news that hopefully makes our forum a little more fun.

I sort of co-authored the MTR (Mini-Team Racing) with Grant which I believe also helps keep interest up. BTW, when are we going to have another one? :Q

So I want to thank all of you for putting up with this "old guy" and his ramblings. You all are a very important part of my life.

Greg aka Smokeball

PS: Get well quick, JWM ;)

Congratulations Smokeball!! :):)

I don't consider myself the most active member of the TeAm but I certainly try to visit the DC forum a couple of times a day. It is posts from you and the other "daily contributors" (Hellburner, OhioDude, etc.) that keep me coming back.

I just want to tell you that I appreciate all the hard work you do for the TeAm. I'm sure we all appreciate it.

Keep crunchin'!

Happy Seti Birthday Greg :)

I remember getting that nice personalized email when I first joined in Dec 2001 :) That's what brought me to the DC forum and now it feels like I have been here forever :)

Thanks for being a big part of what makes this TeAm this best dasm Seti Team in the Universe :)

Hi Smokeball

Happy Birthday!

From one of the snowmen... ;)

By the way Greg, you seem to have progressed quite a long way in one year! I started mid-July last year (albeit I was inactive for about 3 months after) yet I am still at 15xx WUs! Just curious as to what your fleet is like??

Congrats on you SETI birthday, Greg.

You've been patient and knowledgable in helping me with some of my problems and questions and I sure do appreciate it. Folks like you have made this forum the first place I come to when I visit AT. Keep up the good work, my friend, and a hearty thank you from your TeAmmate for all you've done to make this the best SETI forum on the web. :)

Thank you for your nice responses. They are a really great bunch of ?Seti Birthday Presents?. This is better than my real birthday (ahum, ?gg? it?s the 23rd). And next month I can?t believe it but reportedly I am going to receive my 1st Social Security Check. All you youngsters keep working and contributing those FICA taxes now ? you hear! He He LMAO :) :D

And Happy Birthday to you, minendo! :)

I appreciate all of the nice things you all have said, except Eva da Man. :p

/I owe him lunch/I know, I know :|

Snowman Migroo asked about my fleet. As most of you know I?m basically putting it back together after a complete trashing of the TeAm Smokeball SetiQueue. The new router was the ?fix?. You can see I have the ?Q? almost back together again: TeAm Smokeball SetiQueue

?My personal fleet? is made up of eight computers ranging from a Dell Dimension 166/200 to my OCed 1900+ XP on an Epox 8K7A. The team?s Q is being run on a PIII 1GHz with a Supermicro ssa370 motherboard.

Right now there are 42 individual members of TS with somewhere between 50 and 60 computers. The computers range from a Cyrix 120MHz to a 1900+ XP. Half of the team is running computers equivalent to 600 MHz or lower. A few months ago computers in that range comprised 75% of the team. :Q Thus my phrase ?All brought to you for your perusal and comments by the biggest bunch of rag tag crunchers in all of Team AnandTech - TeAm Smokeball?. Ha :D

This mini-team is nowhere near what TA-Cube had once put together (that was really awesome) but I?m working on it. ;)

These are good friends and family. Most are doing it as a personal favor and I do offer light tech support too. :)

To you experts here on AT ... it would be "very light" support. LOL :D
