If you're going to play TF2 - which I do highly recommend - try to find servers with non-competitive settings at first. Short respawn times, large player numbers, that kind of thing - no one's going to give you crap for dying a lot if everyone dies a lot.

Engineer is FPS noob friendly, but not TF2 noob friendly, and it's not going to help you with other FPSes. Don't go right into engineer or medic - while neither require lightning reflexes, those are the two classes in the game people will get pissed at you for screwing up. Engies need to know the maps well enough to place sentries, dispensers and teleporters effectively, and medics need to know when to hit the uber and when to stay out of harms way.

Soldier, pyro or demo is probably your best class as a newbie. Soldiers die lots - that's what they're for - but you should be able to kill a few people at least. Suicide pyros are commonplace, but if you figure out how to use them right, they can be a major thorn in the enemies side. And demo spam is pretty much as easy as you can get. Heavies....well, don't start with them til you know the maps well enough to know where you'll be headshotted the second you pop out.
