On every bootup it does the "checking one of your drives for consistency" what gives?

It is on NTFS, and some files and folders say are corrupted and unreadable and it will reboot my computer. It's an IBM 40GB hd, i wodner if its bad
 
Do you have all the W2K updates? One of them (I don't know if it was a part of SP2 or a standalone patch) dealt with drive corruption on shutdown with fast drives. (System shuts down and powers off while data is still in cache.)
