On board raid or raid card faster?

True HW RAID is expensive, but there are some damned nice ones out there. I'm thinking about adding one to my system. I don't need it, but goddamn it's tempting.

Quad 40 gig 'Cuda IV's, 128 MB cache...

If only they had ATA RAID controllers that were 64-bit PCI, I have these pretty 64-bit PCI slots with nothing 64-bit to stick in 'em.

Dammit, sounds like the Maxtors of a couple years ago.

Well, scratch that then.

Well I'm currently using the on board raid of my kt7. I'm just asking cause I can't decide what to get for my new mobo. A kt266a with on board raid or one without and just get a "software" raid card.

There should be no difference whatsoever.

IE the same RAID chipset should perform identically whether it's running onboard or connected to a PCI slot. It's on the same bus, it's going to perform the same.
