On-board network dead

Yesterday, I tried Ubuntu on my A64 3000+ DFI lanparty 250gb (yeah it should be in my sig i'll get to that later).
I used a live CD, the latest version. After rebooting and going into Windows... No network.

What I've tried: full reboot of router, another cable, reinstall drivers (which caused an error and system freeze almost instantly), deactivating the network card(also caused an error and freeze). Connection attempts with Knoppix.
The fact that any deactivation or driver reinstall attempt cause the freeze make me think it's a hardware problem.

Any suggestions ?

EDIT: It was the Sygate Firewall that somehow never got totally uninstalled... Decided to block all incoming/outgoing except dhcp...
anyway it works now...

Was everything fine before?
The only thing you did was use Ubuntu, then kaput?
Did you change the router settings in ubuntu?

Honestly, maybe it's just laziness but if you have an open pci slot, a new network card is only 10-15 bucks. May be worth not wasting your time more then you have already. However that is just me. I have a mobo that that onboard nic didn't like one of the games I played online, I just bought a new card for 10 bucks and I was up and running with no problems.

Well it's dec 23rd past 8:30 pm... my rigs have the uncommon gift to stick to Murphy's law like no other lol
As I said any operation on the network card (activation/deactivation, driver uninstall/reinstall) always ends in in an error.
I can ping the rig from every other machine on the network.
It connects, but no internet gets through and the culprit computer renews its dhcp adress everytime (static dhcp)
Anyways i work on the same hours as the nearest parts stores are opened this weekend, so i guess it'll wait till monday (and maybe a few bucks off on a boxing day special...)
