on board LAN problem

I've got a ASUS P4S533 with on-board LAN. My internet connection quit on me so I started to troubleshoot. I run Win2k and have a cable modem that goes to a NetGear 8-port Firewall. The desktop computer is run from the firewall and I have a laptop from my job connected to the firewall as well.

I reset the modem and firewall and got a connection from the modem to the laptop and then from the laptop to the firewall. I use the same cable that worked on the laptop to try the desktop but no connection. I've tried the modem to the desktop conncection to remove the firewall and still no connection (or activity lights anyhwere). I removed the SiS adapter from device manager twice and each restart Win2k finds the adapter and installs the driver. But I still have no connection.

Does this confirm that the on board LAN is smoked? Before go buy a PCI netwok card, is there anything else to try? Thanks for all suggestions and bumps.

well, considering the astronomically high cost of nic's i would say DON'T EVEN THINK OF BUYING ONE

or you might try it since they're cheap as hell at like $15 and return it if it's not the problem
