ON Board ethernet bottleknecking my connection speed?

I do apologize if something like this has been addressed previously but the search function didn't turn up much. My issue is different internet connection speeds on two different LAN ports on two different mobos.

I'm currently using an EVGA X58 and my connection speed is an avg. of 10mBps (IP provider is Comcast). I had to switch to my other rig which uses a Striker Extreme mobo to get some files and noticed that the connection speed on that is upwards of 30mBps which is in line of the speeds I should be getting.

I tried updating the network controller drivers on the X58 and got no connection at all . What could be causing the discrepancy in speed? Any info is appreciated. If I need to provide full specs for the systems to help solve the issue let me know. Thanks.

It's probably a driver setting. Check if you have an option to set speed in the wake on lan. But I would go to the mobo manufacturer website and dl the driver uninstall the one you have and install the one from the website.

Have you ever "optimized" your TCP settings for gaming? If yes, that's your problem.

Benchmarking your network connection with an internet download speed is a little tricky.

disable ipv6
disable flow control
make sure your wire is correct for the speed. or downgrade to 100/auto.

ideally you want all devices on your network running the same speed esp with cheap switches.

Thanks for the advice, all. Never tweaked any settings for gaming and can't find a setting to manipulate WoL speed. Using Cat6 cable. I did install an updated driver but getting the same speeds. I also used a diagnostic utility from Realtek which confirmed a connection speed of 10mbps.

While checking the settings I noticed that two pairs of the cat line seemed to not be connected properly. While checking this though, the connection speed jumped to 100mbps! After checking the connection speed on speakeasy, it indeed was hovering around 30mbps. Problem solved. I then rebooted my PC to check a bios setting and when Windows booted up, I had no Internet connection - I unplugged/reinserted cat line and eventually found service again but back at 10mbps.

To preface this, I did terminate one of the cat6 connections myself using the proper tool and (I think) the proper pairing which could explain the malfunctioning pairs but even so, I'm not having any issues with the same cable on the other mobo. It's just confusing - it's not like I have horrifically slow practical performance, I just can't figure out why its slower than the other LAN. I'll give your changes a try, Emulex.

Well that's your problem. Go spend $2 and buy a premade cable.

Please post your full network info.
What nic do you have? Routers name. Any other pcs on the network? Security software installed etc etc.

You can start by booting into safe mode with networking and test it.

As far as the quality of the cable termination - I have no speed issues with the other LAN on the Striker mobo with the same cable. Booted into Safe Mode and speeds are the same. On a side note, every time I restart the PC, I have to disconnect CAT cable and reconnect to get connection.

um.. as far as the other network info, what were you looking for in particular? where can I find it? No other PCs on network. Only security software is Windows Essentials.

If its your bandwidth then its between your router and pc. Check the nic if its set on auto negotiate and not on half duplex

Replace the cable. Certain chips are more tolerant of a poor crimp job (I personally believe all manual crimps, which infer solid core cable being used as a patch cord with likely the incorrect RJ45 termination as "poor".) This is by far the #1 issue with questions like yours. You start at the easy solutions before going "advanced."

Well, that's not really accurate. The switch won't have much to do with that. There is no issue with mixing gig with 100Mb.
