On-board audio failing when OC'ed?

I was using my on-board audio but when I OC my fsb to 150 or greater the sound fails. At first it stuters a lot and when I reboot, windows says there is a problem with it and it doesn't work at all. So I disabled it in bios and slapped my old SB Live! Value back in (AGP/PCI bus locked) and it seems to work great. I can Prime95 all night without issue. Should I worry about the on-board audio issue? Am I damaging something if I leave it OC'ed with the SB card in? Everything else works normally. TIA

You have an AGP and PCI lock in so your soundblaster should be fine. The thing is that if your onboard audio is integrated into the chipset it will still be overclocked since it's not on the PCI bus which is protected through a lock. Turning it off in bios will disable it and I dont' think you'll damage it.

That is a major problem when it comes to ocing and running integrated mobos.....MOst integated mobos are for the oems and joe blow, but many ocers know that can be a roadblock in their ocig efforts.

So if I have mine disabled is it going to hurt anything?

edit: doesn't pretty much everything come with integrated audio nowadays?

If it is disabled it wont hurt anything an obviously you will gain stability in your ocing....

Yes most boards have onboard ac97, but for most and not only entusiast gamers and multimedia ppl the quality is not there anyways....By joe blow I mean the ppl more interested in complete packaged system for basic stuff...ie emachines etc....

I have used it a couple times and the quality has always been poor in my opinion...my old amd/via days it was so poor I bought a cheap sounblaster64, and the quality was noticeable....I tried again with my ecs/amd and I was so disappointed I got my audigy I run today....

Its too bad Asus stopped using the CMedia 8378 sound chip on their mobos. I recently built a PC for a friend using a P4B533. The onboard CMedia sound is very good, and had no problems at all running 160 FSB. The CMedia is one of the few really decent onboard sound options offered.

My daughter plays alot of MP3's and is very satisfied with her onboard CMedia 8738.

If you leave the onboard sound disabled and the Sound Blaster is stable, then no problems:D

I reached 150FSB on both a Asus P4B533-V with onboard C-Media 8738 enabled and a EPoX 4G4A+ with onboard ALC650 enabled with no problems.
